If you were to advise someone as to the best place to start in terms of training for a career in programming, where would that be?
Or in support.
Or in ANYTHING. Oh, hell, I don't know.
I'm all ears. Except for my nose. That's still a nose.

I think it's too late to start a career in programming. I suggest a career in accounting. There's a huge gap between over-50s and under-30s and the accounting profession is seriously trying to recruit more bodies. And accountants (CPAs, tax preparers, financial planners) are recession-proof.

I think hairy one is right.. A 2 year accounting school..IF big government wins the day..what he posted will be in more demand for regulators and enforcement. I also believe seriously that hard laborers..yes.. Plumbers, drywall heavy equipment operators and manual laborers will rebound and be needed as we age and retire. My son is a welder and is working 7 days a week. Be valuable in many areas and be recession proof.
Many women are more qualified than men in this alone.
They can multi task where men only relied on 1 field of expertize.
Now men are re training as nurses..cooks..and other fields that are still doing great today.

How about an accounting/programming hybrid? Maybe some drywalling thrown in for good measure?
I'm game.

I've done porn. It's OK. But that wooden ball was a serious drawback.

Best of luck -- you'll need it.
I've been on three search committees in the last year alone, and I'm amazed by the number of people with graduate degrees (especially JDs) who are applying for jobs well below the pay grade commensurate with their educational achievements.

I hear they are looking for speech writers in the Obama administration on the topic, "How to blame everything that doesn't work out over the next four years on George Bush". I think you might be good at it.
I also hear they are looking for accountants to calculate the debt that Obama and the Democrats will acculumate over the next four years. Required skills: Must know how to operate a calculator that can calulate into the trillions of dollars.
Finally, I hear Obama will be looking for future speech writing positions on why the $878 billion stimlus bill didn't work. Required skills: Must have creative ideas on how to blame it all on the Republicans.

The limbaugh zombies on conservative talk radio are already both blaming everything that is wrong on Obama, but also accusing him of inaction because in his under two months in office he hasn't fixed it all yet. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)
