Hawaii wont cut mens volleyball, i guarantee that. The tradition is too rich. The past seasons have been the coaching staff failing miserably. Theres no other excuse. Hawaii should be bringing in top end recruits and they're not. Without the misfortune of jim clar and matt rawson getting hurt, the past years ONLY GOOD recruits have been matt rawson, jim clar, ric cervantes, matt vanzant, and steven grgas. The fact that nobody else is coming in or being developed rides directly on the coaching staffs shoulders. The only reason why teams in the past were good is because they have an INSANE foreign player (or multiple) on their team that would just kill balls for them. Players are getting scared to come to UH. Coaching has nothing to do with bringing in foreign/illegal players who already know how to play. America doesn't have "Sports school" where all they do is play sports and have a minimal amount of schooling. The problem wont be fixed unless we bring in a young coaching staff that is connected usav or has a lot of connections in socal/hawaii prep volleyball.
PS- Players in the past who have had success is program consistently say that Mike wilton is probably the worst coach they've ever played for. (Costa theoridas said that in an article).

Just looking at what Wilton have been doing the past two season is enough to raise your eye brawal. Especially in his recruiting ability.
How can you place your starting setter in front of OH you recruited for that position? When you have different players playing different positions nearly every other weekend, yet you have designated MB/OH's but apparently not good enough, then something says you need to recruit better.

The criticism has been coming in before Costas. Andre Breuer wrote a letter to the AD and sent it to the local newspapers. Here is the article from 1999. archives.starbulletin.com/1999/05/08/sports/story2.htmlIn fact, Breuer went on to play at Pepperdine the next year instead of returning to Germany.

I'm sure the supporters of both the LMU and SDSU men's volleyball programs said the exact same thing 10 years ago. (Matter of fact...LMU had just come off their best season ever, making the MPSF semi-finals and having a first-team All-American in Reid Priddy when their program was cut)

The problem is the program is already as low as it can go.
Hawaii aint cutting men's volleyball period, the AD is well aware that the program has the potential to make money .........they just need a new coach and to win.
Wilton seems like he is phoning it in, he probably knows his time is up. He hasn't even bothered to show up to pot lucks with his team and their families.

He's lost his mind. Between him and joe wortan at pacific (and now al scates is joining them in the crazy category), theres really no worse coaches. Hawaii should be at the top every single year, all arrows point to the coach. Everybody in hawaii can attest to this, Costas as a freshman was a freak and that had nothing to do with mike wilton or the coaching staff. These great foreign players came in good or great and just got better on their own.

I had no clue many of the Hawaii fans felt that way about Mike Wilton. Come to think of it, I never see him smile much when he's on the sidelines, even when his team makes a great play or when they win a match (and those wins have been few and far between this year!). Chris McLachlan as the next Hawaii men's coach is a great idea. I bet SO many locals (and even Californians) would sign on the dotted line to play for him. I think returning to recruiting from Europe is the best hope for Hawaii in the near future. Develop a relationship with feeder secondary and prep schools on the continent. Ask former players (from both the men's and women's teams) from Sweden, Serbia, Greece and Croatia to recommend UH to those who maybe have never considered attending university in the US (or much less in Hawaii). What about Asia? Anyone thought of heading in that direction for future possible players of the year? How I long for the days of Katz's line shots or Costas' cross-court bangers!

Chris McLachlan would be a great idea to replace Wilton, but, not sure if he would take the job if was offered to him. I say this, because when Charlie Wade left to go coach at Pacific, McLachlan was asked by someone (I think it was Jim Leahy) if he would consider taking the job Wade left behind and Chris said he wouldn't and pretty much stated he was done coaching and enjoyed being a TV commentator for the sport instead.
BUT, if Chris did take the job for the Men's, it would be pretty awkward I would think for him to coach against his son at Stanford.

Interesting. Is he taking his whole family with him? Anyone know if his daughter is still married to the ex-cop who is in prison in Hawaii?

Oops. Nevermind. He was sentenced in federal court, so he's probably in a federal prison on the mainland someplace.

agree with scates, he's past his days High risk comment around here. The last time I posted that thought, the large group of UCLA fans trapped in the 80s and 90s here at VT came at me with all sorts of great internet acceptable terms to describe my understanding of the game. I believe the word blasphemous was used about 17 times and a few of the zealots even likened Scates to the greatest college coach to ever oversee any team sport, John Wooden. Scates was a great coach in him prime, before the major rule changes (libero and scoring change). You're right on the mark that Scates has stayed too long at the party, but can you blame him for sticking around to collect the free money that UCLA gives him? His lifetime achievements have earned him the right to collect that paycheck until the state runs out of money or he feels he collected enough. But it's a shame for a program with such tradition that still draws some great talent. Imagine what an alumni and former assistant coach such as Speraw could do with that program. Sadly for UCI fans, we'll probably see what Speraw can do running UCLA within a few years.
