Wow, I knew USC was on a roll, so I figured having an off night like this would be trouble. Thank goodness they played perhaps the most overrated team in the history of NCAA volleyball. Someone please tell me why Del Valle, Lipsitz, and Price were AAs. I know this year had a lot of very good players with only a few standouts, but after watching that match, what a joke that PSU was given so much automatic respect. 2-3 against the MPSF for the year and blown out by the 5th place MPSF team when all the marbles were on the line. Boy did they miss Murray in that match. Goas was terrible.
Should be a good finals on Saturday.

USC is certainly playing well at the right time. A team full of sophomores and Juniors. Incredible. I would talk more about USC being the fifth place MPSF team and soundly beating PSU, but I'm not sure any of the MPSF teams could beat USC. If UCI comes back to form, they will give USC a run.
PSU missed Matt Anderson. The AA's on PSU other than Holt were not deserved and once again, the stars and FF seeding have to be aligned for PSU to win the NC. The MPSF is going to be very competitive next year.
UCI v USC... Still can't call it.

Um, UCSDfan, I wouldn't judge Price negatively. The dude just had 17 kills with only 1 error on 25 swings, to go along with 5, yes 5, aces.
I do agree though that Penn State was clearly not as good this year as last, and probably overrated. But man, if Matt Anderson didn't leave, PSU would have automatically won the title. Like there would have been no challene.
PS: Murphy Troy was absoultely amazing. However, someone please tell him to shave his chest hair

I'm not sure I'd jump on the PSU would have been an automatic champ, because Murray helped make Anderson good. But they would have been the odds on favorite. But what this match did was expose that the AA voting committee were being huge apologists putting so many non-MPSF players on the AA team. The fact of the matter is that this year the nation was dominated by the MPSF teams, many of who were lead by kids from all over the country. The top seven teams in the nation were also the top seven teams in the MPSF. Holt will be something great at the next level, and he was deserving of the accollades. The others, Price included, just didn't look like AAs.

I thought Price played really well actually. Maybe he didn't deserve 1st team but certainly a 2nd team player. I was most surprised with Del Valle's play. This was the worst I have ever seen him play. There was one play when he put up two terrible bump sets in a row. Shocked to see that. Holt will certainly help the national team at some point.

i agree, del valle is a legit player. He just had a bad game straight up. He's good, everyone has bad games. Holt, price, del valle all deserved AA this year. Goas did not deserve AA whatsoever, mckibben/klipsch/bannan all better and contributed more to the team. personally i thought luke murray was the biggest loss to psu, thats just me though. USC is peaking at the right time.... Go uci

Great match! I thought it had more intensity & excitement than the 2nd semis.
Not having seen PSU play at all this season until the semis, I would've thought Price was the leader. He had intensity & played really well; he seemed really hungry & aggressive. Holt & Lipsitz were solid. I expected Del Valle to be more impressive than he was at last year's Final Four but he seemed to have fallen back on earth. Goas was the difference; I thought his sets looked cleaner than Murray's from last year but he looked intimidated at the occasion. Didn't they mention that Matt Anderson was in attendance but the camera didn't find him?! Or did he change his look so much that I didn't recognize him?!
USC continued to be impressive & played really well together as a team. I expected Troy & Ciarelli to dominate but Bourne was equally impressive! Overall, it was an awesome team effort for them! They seem to have all the momentum & fire going into the final; I'd say they may have a slight edge over UCI.

i didnt get to watch the match but by reading the post about PSU libero Del Valle, im wondering if this is a case like tony ker where he maxed out his capability of improving his freshmen year..is this the case for Del Valle or am i just thinking stupid?

Matt was there sleeveless Navy PSU volleyball shirt showing off his huge biceps and new tat! HAHA!
Congrats to SC on a strong performance. The crow tasted horrible! BTW Certainly PSU could have made some adjustments here or there but you could see the body language of some of the PSU players that anxiety and frustration was in full motion. Clearly the PSU team was affected by the lack of quick points they were used to getting off the serve. SC being abit more battle tested due to great competiton the past few weeks adjusted comfortably.
That Venue Sucked. Never play in Provo again. I'm not even complaining about the air. The gym stinks with little room and I counted at least 7 plays where the air ducts and ceiling came into play. USC had at least 3 ball shanked out of play only to return back to the court. In this day and age that should not be.
Bravo to SC for pulling out a solid performance. Mckibbin did very nice job
