I am not sold on Minnesota being as high as they are. . Of course not, you're a badger fan. This is good for the Gophers. I higher ranking would have gotten into their heads a little bit. Plus, they have the opportunity now to beat Illionis in conference and gain a bump in the polls. My biggest surprise is UCLA. maybe some of the voters didn't think Spicer graduated ... ?

I never liked the Gophers and never will, however, Dieter, Gibbemeyer, and Tan are the only returning starters, so I am trying to figure out why they would be ranked as high as they are. No matter how talented Harms and Love are, they will have to adapt to the collegiate game. In reality this ranking is based on potential. Whether Carico or Tabberson starts, both are new to Minnesota's system so I think the ranking is too high. I think Illinois is going to end up in second place and the Gophers third.
I also believe my Badgers are going to beat the gophers at the field house and will loose to the Gophers in Minneapolis.

Maybe because all three of those returning starters are All-Americans, badgerbill? And Carico has been one, too? And the recruiting class is ranked first in the country? Anyway, I like the Badgers and always will, but I see them losing to the Gophers both times this year.

Cowles is also a returning starter, but beyond that the Gophers are better at setter, opposite, M2 and L2 than in 2008. Simple as that.
And #11 is not a high ranking, especially since #13 was not an accurate 2008 ranking (fell there when they lost to ISU without Dieter). So Gophers are still being penalized for that loss.
But that's the way it goes.

... And I see only four Pac-10 teams in the top 10. Probably reasonable; considering who's graduated a couple of those teams might even be placed too high. ONLY? MIGHT BE?

I know Dieter is an amazing outside but lets be serious, Minnesota would not have dominated Iowa State with her in the game last year. Maybe you're not implying this but everyone talks like Iowa State would have never had a chance had the Gophers had Dieter. (We dominated Set 1 and 4).
Yes Minnesota may have won, but it would have still been a battle. Can't wait for the rematch with the Gophers with Dieter.
I think Iowa State is good at 13, by the way.

Considering Wright State is picked to finish 5th in the Preseason Horizon League Coaches poll, pretty good chance Witchita State lost about 24 pts because of WSU on some ballots. Same thing in Women's basketball last year with South Dakota State losing points to San Diego State because of SDSU on ballots.

Not that he needs me to rush to his defense, but he said nothing about domination (he didn't imply anything about it, either). Who knows what would have happened with Dieter? I will say this: Iowa State was terrific in that match. And they should be higher than 13.

Anyway, I like the Badgers and always will, but I see them losing to the Gophers both times this year. Well while I do think that Minnesota is right where they should be (in all the polls) which is no higher than 8 and no lower than 12...Carico and a bunch of freshmen coming into the program is a legit conversation to have. I don't care how great a setter is (and Carico certainly isn't "great"), that position is the hardest to adjust to on a new team as well as the most important position to adjust to....tell me one top program that doesn't have a setter that "clicks" with the team? so saying Carico was an All American two years ago is practically moot at this point until she plays some matches with the Gophers. Freshmen will also be FRESHMEN. the standout freshmen the past few seasons have been standout in some because of their talent but in a large part because of the extraordinary team they have around them. Klineman, Hodge, Hooker, Faucette etc. all came into teams that were already great without them. I don't think I can say that Minnesota is a "great" team without the addition of the freshmen and a transfer setter. good, yes, great? no. Minnesota has a packed preseason schedule that should leave them battle tested for the rest of the season. Whether or not the talent on the squad matures into something great has yet to be seen...Carico's last team sure failed to meet expectations and they were deeper and more experienced than this Minnesota team. But I do think Minnesota takes both matches with the Badgers this year.

As they say time will tell. I may be proven wrong, but I just don't see Minnesota finishing in the top ten and only third in the big ten. Wheter Carico was an all-american at USC has nothing to do with how well she will perform at Minnesota under a new coach and new sytem. I like to get Minnesota fans riled up.

Who are these frosh? There will be ONE frosh in the starting lineup -- Love. That's it. You have made it abundantly clear you feel this way, even going so far as to say you "dislike" her. I think you should give her a chance. Same comments as above. I think you have serious misconceptions about who the Gophers have coming back and who will be playing. I also suspect you are seriously underrating Carico, but we shall see. Wow. High praise. Anyhow, I don't care if they are #11. It just bothers me that you keep making these comments that are not grounded in reality.

My biggest surprise is UCLA. maybe some of the voters didn't think Spicer graduated ... ? OK, as much as I am a fan of Suzie Fritz, Kansas State lost nearly 77% of their offense Almost 50% of their digs, and over 60% of their blocking due to graduation. How are they even in the top 25. And then there is Tulane, who lost over 60% of their offense, 57% of their assists and 50% of their blocking due to graduation.

What were they smoking!!! There weren't any teams ranked 31, 32, or 40something. Those only received votes. If they ranked the top 50 teams those who agreed with you and didn't vote for those teams would have gotten additional votes and those teams wouldn't be as high as you say. The poll only goes to 25.
