As a parent of a player, I simply want to give you my impression. The program is fine; the coaching is solid and life moves on. Is it a perfect situation? No. Does Minnesota have the tools to move forward? Yes. It is an adjustment. This is a team. Let’s give them a chance to come together as a team and see what they can do. In the words of Friedrich Nietzsche, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger. “ Amen! I've heard the same thing. It's not ideal, but the team and coaches are fine. They are moving on and looking ahead. Now let's support the rest of the team. They will be fine with Love, Harms, Wilson and Cowles as OHs. Great talent!

Lots of posters here dumping on her without having any inside knowledge.
Leticia Armstrong quit volleyball at Texas in the middle of the season back in 2006; rumors as to why she quit, but nothing ever reported publicly.
Sometimes, it's best to respect an individual athlete's privacy. No matter her reasons for leaving, she has to do what is best for her . . .

This is a tough stretch of the schedule to be figuring out lineups, though...with Mich State, followed by Mich and some team named penn state....

I don't see lineups or subs as an issue. If they start Wilson, Love and Harms at OH, Wilson plays full rotation, like Dieter did, and Cowles comes in for Love, as she always has, and Granquist comes in for Harms, as she often did for Wilson. If subs get tight at the end of the match, so be it.
If Cowles starts for Dieter, subs are even less of an issue. They'll be fine.

I would not be surprised to see a 6-2, with Cowles and Love as OHs and Harms and Love as opposites with Carico and Tabberson.
Why not?
Another option is to move Gibby to OH or opposite. I know it sounds crazy, but she needs to get the ball more now.
The easiest move is to do what they did against NW, just have Cowles replace Dieter. But you can't set Cowles as if she were Dieter. Where does the offense come from?
Purely from a volleyball standpoint (and believe me it's hard for me to look at this situation that way), Brook was not getting it done on the outside, for whatever reason. However, the Gophers best chance (only chance?) of going far this year was if she turned it around. I'm sure everyone knew that. Too much pressure?

Sorry to see Brook go. D1 athletics are very stressful and no matter how sensible the coaching staff may be, they are inevitably very demanding. This could not have been an easy decision for Brook, knowing that everyone would be criticizing her. Sports are not supposed to make you miserable and, if she was miserable, then it was a courageous move by her to move on.

Tough situation for the Gophers, obviously, but at least they have some depth and some options as to what to do. I hope that things go well for Dieter from here on out, but I agree that you should try to finish out a season if at all possible.

Hmmm.... Leaving midseason as a 6 rotation player on a top ten team when your school is hosting regionals? Must be some personal stuff going on. I really hope she is at peace with this decision and that she has an opportunity to play at a great school next year. She is so talented.

Just a hunch, but I'd put money on Brook being done with her NCAA career. I think this move was a move out of volleyball -- not out of Minnesota volleyball. I would be shocked to see her at a different school for one season next year.
Good point, tgopher: 6 rotations, top ten, hosting regional --- you don't turn that stuff down just because you don't like the program. She's not going to find that next year and still be able to stay close enough to home.

I'm not arguing with you here, as I have a slight feeling she's done with volleyball, not just Minnesota volleyball... but where does the "stay close enough to home" comment come from? I'm honestly curious - I realize she stayed close to home to play for Minnesota. But do we know that she doesn't want to get away from home? Perhaps she'll do what Carico did and go far from home, in a different environment... Heck, maybe she'll end up at USC.

I would have to agree that there's something very personal going on. Like another poster mentioned earlier, she has not had that "sparkle" this year as she has had previously.
Even physically, I mentioned something to a friend the other day that every time I see them play on tv, she looks like she just rolled up out of bed and came to the gym. Her hair is a mess and she doesn't look "together".
Her skills/stats are still great, but if something serious is going on in her life where it's best for her to step away from the game and/or her team, then everybody needs to respect that.
A TRUE teammate would understand that and would WANT whatever is best for that person, not what's best for the team.

Maybe she needs a little less pressure and D2 volleyball at a smaller private school may offer that. It's unfortunate that she didn't finish the season. :-(

It's always interesting when a "star" starter leaves a program.....
