I have little direct connection with the program any more. But I would hope when KG retires the department does a complete search and doesn't just hand over the program.
Regardless, unless I had a signed contract in hand for teh head coaching job, if another came along at a school with a good history, I'd grab it. After all, you can always pull a C. Wade. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and all that.

This will be a questionable hire for UOP, Kathy over recommended him she must want him out at UCSB. Just last season she told him it was do or die. What a CROCK! Your either a disgruntled Parent or a VT insider wanna b. Don't quit your day job if you have one.

I tend to agree with you TSB - There are a small group of schools that would be considered dream jobs with long time coaches who at some point will retire (can u say UCLA). I think Greg probably realizes at this paticular time in his career he may think he would be in the group of coaches just under the actual group that would be considered for any of those jobs. One being UCSB in my Opinion. I wish him Good Luck.

Mt guess is Kathy won't be retiring for 5 years. She loves the job and had a new-found energy this year. What else would she do?

I have no idea who Gregg is, and therefore no idea how good of a job he will do. I do know that given who they contacted about taking this position, they fell way short of what they anticipated they could get. There are probably 10 better college coaching jobs in California, and youre not going to be able to attract top kids from the midwest, south or east, to UOP. He better be good, or he better bring in international players.

UOP as an institution is outstanding. If a recruit is looking for a good education, UOP is attractive outside CA... remember the Candy Man? UOP WVB is another matter... it's pretty far down but, unlike many of the ten jobs alleged to be ahead of the UOP job in CA, it is not caught up in the ongoing bankruptcy of the state government (an interesting conundrum, as the U.S. Supreme Court has said... so far... that states can't go bankrupt). Don't assume that Cal and UCLA will escape... politicians love to make people share the pain. At Illinois (my alma mater), the FB and MBB programs are fully funded with no state subsidy but have still been hit with mandatory unpaid furlough days. Here's a link to a Record article last week about the search... it names several folks who supposedly turned down the job... and quotes Charlie Wade (who was in town with the UH MVB team) saying that UOP WVB is well-funded. www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100120/A_SPORTS/1200325/-1/NEWSMAP

Very few know how good a school it is unless they have either researched it or actually been there. We know the KSkid doesn't know Greg so I confused how he knows they fell short on the hire? I know who most of the candidates were and I can tell you the group that hired him feel great about their new coach! I think they made a good pick as well and I know him!

Not saying it isnt a terrific school and it wouldnt be a great place for a kid to compete and study. I'm just saying a top player from California or the Midwest is going to go to a long list of schools before they would UOP. When UOP was great there were probably less than ten really good volleyball programs. Of that ten, fewer supported volleyball at the level UOP did. Its a whole new ballgame. A sophmore volleyball player has zero recollection of UOP as a volleyball power, to them their history, tradition is an ancient memory. A mid level recruit in Indianpolis would have no idea who UOP is, where it was or if it was even Division 1. A kid in California certainly may, but would have an extensive list of schools that tothem would appear more attractive or would at least be on their radar. Again, UOP is a terrific school, but I believe the hire tells you everything you need to know about where people see this as a program. They contacted head coaches from mid major conferences who had zero interest in taking that job.

I don't disagree with anything you said - maybe with the way you say it You could say the same about the WAC and the WCC along with the Big West. Not every player or coach can go to the Pac 10, big 10 or 12. I'm just sayin they made a good hire. Greg is a good coach and a good guy. Most head coaches want to move up when they change jobs and don't take lateral moves. Dunning was there for a while before he had the success that elevated him to Stanford. I'm not trying to argue here - I just wish them the best and congrats. Obviously I have skin in the game here

One quick note vbbuck, John Dunning won two National Championships in his first two seasons at UOP (although he'll certainly give a lot of the credit to what Taras Liskevych left him), so you really can't say he was "there for a while before he had success"! ;D Anyway, here's the follow-up article that The Record promised when they first announced Greg's hiring at UOP: www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100129/A_SPORTS/1290325/-1/A_SPORTS08BTW, a clue about the assistant coaches who vbbuck alluded to being hired on the Jobs Thread is contained in this article!
