China beat Dom. 3-0 in the Hangzhou leg of the Masters, thanks to the return of their captain, Wei. Next up is Turkey and Cuba.
On the question of talent, the issue is not talent but passing. Coach Wang himself admits, China's problem is with passing, preventing the setter from properly setting the ball for attack, creating many difficulties for China. The inability of the previous coach, Cai Bin, to solve this problem, led to poor performances, and his firing.
By the way, Cai Bin was roasted alive by angry Chinese fans. He was written off as an incompetent fool. But it wasn't entirely his fault. Poor passing stems from inadequate training in the provincial teams, but as the national coach, he had to take the fall.
Coach Wang came from the top club team, Tianjin (who is playing against the Huskers right now in China). I have faith in him. If the rabid fans can give him some time to iron out the various flaws, I'm sure China can improve substantially.

I had a conversation with a good friend of mine who was linked into the Chinese volleyball system, he was a former player for the men's NT and 81 team. He predicted that the performance of the younger players would begin to suffer when the Chinese sports hierarchy decided to slowly get out of the traditional communist sport system. The passing problem is the first sign of the impact of that decision. By placing the attention on professional teams and dismantling the traditional feeder programs, the uniformity of quality training is gone. I am not sure that it could make a comeback. The traditional system was very brutal to the physical health of the athletes, but they got results.

Yeah, the old communist system was effective in turning out really proficient players, but it was a double-edged sword. The very tough system also created lots of injuries. In the past, this was less of a problem as the talent pool was large enough for rapid replacement of any injured players. But now, the talent pool is shrunk and injured players can't be easily replaced. So that is the dilemma confronting Coach Wang.
China beat Turkey 3-1 last night in Hangzhou by the way.
