great match, Baruch vs. Emmanuel yesterday...Baruch in 5, two great OHs, Pablo Oliveira for Baruch and Curtis Abram for Emmanuel...Oliveira had a very smooth 40kills!! and hit .580 for the day...Abram 27kills and hit .560...Pablo top 10 in aces, kills and #18 in % nationally, Abram top 10 in all 3 categories...both passed exceptionally well too...Baruch's deceptive setter Echeverria and great defense esp. L Kawahigashi got the best of Emmanuel...great play by Saints setter/opp Updike and middles Todd and McCaffery...Rivier in GNAC for Emm next week, Baruch with Kowalski getting back looking tough for Necvas

Impressive performance by Oliveira, should probably get AVCA Player of the Week again. Any ideas of what will the seeding look like for the NECVA Tournament?

I was hoping to read some more smack on Baruch and their setter from MB4 Life, anything to say about this weekend vs Emmanuel and Endicott since you seem to be an authority on this volleyball forum as well as an expert on setting???

Well, if you insist..... I thought Pablo was a beast this weekend. 40K 5Err 60Att. You throw a ball up to him, and he puts it away. Speaking of throws, Baruch setter was whistled for 2 BHE, which I thought were legit. There were two other calls that were missed during the Baruch Emmanuel match that I think should have been blown on the Baruch Setter. His setting is so borderline (meaning how long he holds the ball, not his location) that it could honestly go either way. At least you had a R1 that has seen a ton of high caliber matches. He is a very deceptive setter, and I have always said this. That's all I have to say about the weekend. Baruch played well, and I tip my hat to them. THey should be in good shape heading into the playoffs.

Well to be honest I have played with and seen all kinds of setters, national team to D III and the thing youre missing is that he has different types of releases and possibly most of the times he does deep dish the ball (even as a beach player that I am, I still do not like it even though I have been accused of deep dishing) however, it's like being an attacker or blocker...u just cant hit line all the time, or block crosscourt all the time, this game changes and a key to being a solid setter is being able to have diff releases whether quick or slow, the ability to set at 3rd story or 1st story is extremely important bro. You have to give the guys credit(which you so graciously did) not for the emmanuel match as much as the Endicott...after the 5 setter and riding pablo the whole way they couldve folded to a scrappy Endicott team yet they beat em in 3 with these #'s(hitting % each game; 1 14 7 27 .259 2 15 5 32 .312 3 21 8 36 .361 As well as a more balanced offense; Baruch # Player K E TA PCT 3 Vincent Cruz 8 2 12 .500 7 Pablo Oliveira 19 6 34 .382 8 Ray Satagaj 7 6 17 .059 9 Nick Smith 7 3 13 .308 12 Jesus Echevarria 3 1 6 .333 15 Steven Coniglio 6 2 13 .308 Totals 50 20 95 .316 So...as you have implied in earlier posts, the setter is responsible for making the hitters better, Jesus seemed to have done that here. But...I do believe once the ball leaves the setter's hands, it is all on the hitter, I have seen bad setters get it done with good hitters, volleyball is such a unique sport that we all need one another...I guess I just dont like to see one person's position to get too much blame or credit...besides, middles are key bro.

more deep dish: Puerto Rican setters or Chicago pizzerias? funny...Echeverria is VERY deep dish, but very effective...Pablo = beast and best all around OH i've seen...everyone loves Brubaker, but his hitting % is not too hot...all around OHs tough to touch Pablo, next group would be Fredericksen from Vassar and Abram from Emmanuel for kills, hitting %, aces etc...over Bru, Andreozzi, Gimello etc...

as noted before, deep dishing can be very effective and deceptive. as long as it isn't being called by the officials, it will continue to be successful as long as the setter has the other talents and decision making skills needed for the position.

Echeverria does deep dish but he is a very smart setter who knows who to set and when to set them. He probably would lead D3 in dumps(even though he sometimes does it too much) if it was a separate stat, he can trick anyone dumping from both the front and back row what is impressive since he is only 5'10. Oliveira hands down my candidate for player of the year. Great serve, hitting % and defense. 6 time cuny, 3 time necva and 2 time avca player of the week. By far the best player in D3 this year. With Kowalski getting back before NECVA no one should want to face these guys.
