Isn't the main JOB of a good setter putting up "a good ball"? That is not the main job as a setter. A setter's main job comes down to two things: knowing how to win and leading. Everything else comes after that. No question. I agree, which is why Haen is in this discussion. All of these setters bring different skill sets to their teams and run different types of systems, but it's the intangibles that set (pardon the pun) them apart from their peers. While DeBruler receives most of the accolades, Haen is equally as important to the success of Illinois. She's not flashy, but "puts up a good ball," is consistent, and makes very good decisions. However, it's her competitiveness and leadership that make her a good setter. Last year, her teammates unanimously voted her as the most competitive player on the team. She may not be as athletic as some of the other top setters, but she should definitely be considered among the elite this year.

If anyone watched the Michigan/Penn State game, you should know who the best setter in the country is.
Lexi Zimmerman made some unbelievable sets and, again, is the most deceptive setter I've ever seen. Beyond that, her defense was ridiculous. I could not believe some of the defensive plays she made. My jaw dropped more than once after seeing that girl play.
Fantastic volleyball player.

As a good as she might have been today (I haven't seen the match), she can also go ice cold. I prefer a steadier "hand" at that position.

Your post would've made more sense if it started with, "In my opinion...". Practice what you preach buddy

It wasn't necessary to see every single setter in the country to participate. You only need to have seen the setters listed.

There is no doubt that Lexi is a fun setter to watch, but IMO she plays a bit out of control by continuing to fall all over the court. Her sets are not that tight and when flustered, she attacks the ball way too much. As a matter of fact, through last week games, Lexi has attacked the ball 219 times! Ouch. Thought she was suppose to be setting!! Maybe the thread should be "Most Agressive Setter in 2010. In the end I believe the numbers tell the story. YTD statistics through 9/26: Rank

I've never seen her go ice cold and I've watched her play more than a few times. Also, I don't get why you put the word "hand" in quotations...

Licht is more terminal and Cook probably has his daughter setting Licht to make her look good. Don't get me wrong, I love Lauren Cook (she's amazing) but Anderson has done a great job the previous years and I don't get it why she's not setting a 5-1. I find it hard to believe that you would make a statement like that. First John Cook does not need to do ANYTHING to make Lauren Cook look good. She IS good. Second I'm sure during the spring both setters had opportunity to set both opps and it would be my guess that L. Cook has more success setting the ball in a location and rhythm to have success to Licht than Anderson. John Cook's first goal is to put his team in a position to WIN matches. If he thought Nebraska would be stronger in a 5-1 with Anderson you can be sure that would be the case.

YTD statistics through 9/26: Rank She's a First-Team All-American. She's doing something right. Michigan's success over the past 3 years is due, in it's entirety, to Lexi Zimmerman. Rosen has built the program around her and she's the reason that they've been a top Big Ten team during her tenure. She's an amazing setter. Almost no other setter that I've seen takes the risks that Lexi takes. Falling onto the ground doesn't make you a bad setter. Getting your hands to every ball should be seen as a strength, not a weakness. The disdain some people have is pathetic.

Also need to look at W-L record. you can't just look at the assists per set stat in a vacuum. for one thing, Zimmerman is one of the more offensive setters on this list (save the ones who're in a 6-2 system). she averages almost 1.5 kills per set, so naturally her assists per set stat will also be lower.
