Fun fact for me, Brandi Carlile was a neighbor across the hall and six doors down when I lived in an apartment in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle. This was about 6 years ago when she was still an aspiring artist, shortly after they converted our complex to condos and all us poor early 20s people had to move out, she signed with a major label and her songs started showing up in big TV shows and movies.

She was really cool actually, she would go over to a friend of mines in the same apartment but a floor down and jam out on the guitars together and drink a couple beers and watch the Simpsons like one of the guys. So glad of her success, she was (I'm sure still is) an incredibly nice person with THE best voice I have ever heard.

I've been snowmobiling with her brother. Her mother used to work at an espresso stand my dad went to. She told us that her daughter was going to drop out of school to become a professional musician and we thought that was crazy. Guess we were wrong.

I listened to some of her early demo tapes and thought she was trying too hard to imitate Melissa Etheridge, but that was years ago. I think it's what got her signed, though.

Mike, there is a YouTube video of her singing a duet with her mom on stage at a concert which is very cool.

Pedro, she seems to be an incredibly gracious young woman who cares a great deal for her fans. She played for almost two full hours too. And yes, she had an amazing voice. One of the highlights of the show was when everyone left the stage except for her, and with her acoustic guitar sang Patsy Cline's "Crazy." She can do things with her voice that are just unreal. Should also mention the twins with whom she writes most of her songs are VERY talented musicians.

Really don't like the whole Phish "scene" but damn they competed with the Grateful Dead in that genre:

I was at the Brandi Carlile show at the Seattle zoo tonight. Partway through this 12-yr-old (I'm guessing) girl goes up to the stage and hands Brandi a paper plate. She reads the note on the plate, then steps up to the mic and reads it out loud. "Brandi, would you please sing happy birthday to my dad, Scott?" The girl and her friend who was with her were pretty much melting with excitement at this point.

Then Brandi sang Happy Birthday to Scott, with a fair amount of the audience joining in by the concluding verse.

After that the show continued on as normal....

I've only heard a few of their songs, but to my mind they are absolutely nothing like the Grateful Dead. I never understood the connection, except that once Jerry died the Deadheads needed an excuse to keep doing their thing, and somehow Phish became it.
