No offense meant to Cal or the Cal fans, but I don't understand this. Washington would probably have 5000 fans there to see the team clinch the conference championship. I don't get why only 1000 show up to see the first ever championship being clinched. It's tough to get fans anywhere on this holiday weekend. So many kids go home from every school. True, and the noon start time also didn't help. But as a point of comparison it looked like there were about 3000 people there for the UW/Oregon match tonight. [Box score is up: 3622]

I think had it not been a holiday week with students on Thanksgiving break, there might have been a larger crowd. It's unfortunate that because of the break, there was no pep band and a much smaller rally committee than usual. Last week against Stanford, with plenty of advance publicity ~ and no holiday break ~ Cal set an all-time school attendance record for volleyball with nearly 4,400. The Stanford match each season usually draws the largest attendance. A good crowd for Cal typically is in the 1,000 to 1,300 range. Hopefully, if Cal is chosen as a first and second round host for the NCAA tournament next week, they will draw larger crowds than they do for the regular season. Still, for those who did come out today for the early start, they were treated to a great match by both teams ~ and, for Cal fans who have followed the team throughout the entire season, it was a very satisfying result regardless of time of day the match was played.

By the way, I noticed that Sunderland and Karch were there doing the Pac-10 MOTW; must have been the wildcard selection. McPeak wasn't doing it; I remember last week I started noticing that she looked very pregnant as she stood for the pre-match intro and I'm guessing that was a factor. I guess they had Karch ready to step in if McPeak couldn't make it.
They tried some different things, including Karch sitting at the end by himself with a monitor. That was a little bit odd, but then again coaches always prefer watching from the ends.

Holly does that frequently, too. I'm not going to ask her if she's pregnant, I had to ask a woman that once and I'm still quivering- fortunately the answer was yes. I thought Karch was too busy for this stuff nowadays- he's not really that great at it, but I find his presence reassuring.

Holly McPeak (2:08 PM) I still get out there and play with all of the pros. I'm almost 7 months pregnant right now, so I can only do non-jumping things, so I can only play as much as possible.

I'll take that as a yes and stop making fat jokes immediately. Yet another tiny libero soon to grace the earth...
