Today I watched several Youtube segments of the UW/Hawaii video from K5 TV in Hawaii.
I've said this before, but this video really brings home the outstanding quality of the K5 broadcast. They do a first rate job. The play by play guy is outstanding, his color commentator is excellent.
The camera work is great. They have figured out how to do replays frequently without missing ANY of the live action.
They talk about what's happening in the game...no meandering stories.
They never once said the Libero is wearing a different color uniform and you have to win by two!!!!!!!
Every college crew doing volleyball webcasts; every ESPN volleyball crew; and every Fox sports volleyball crew should be required to sit in a room and study that K5 broadcast and learn a few things.
And if all TV and web coverage of volleyball was this good, I think a lot more sports fans would get into volleyball.

Chris was a volunteer coach at Stanford last year where his son Spencer plays and used to coach Punahou High School where they won I believe 7 straight state championships in the 80's (on a side note, I believe he also coached Barack Obama in basketball at Punahou). Ryan Tsuji was an assistant coach/grad assistant with the Rainbow Wahine for years. If it had been Jim Leahy doing play by play, that would have been bad since he gets all the names wrong and does not know what is going on a lot of the time.

And you didn't have to hear Lisa Strand-Ma'a say "Dave Soji" 50 times.

One advantage that the K-5 camera crew has is that the station has been awarded the contract for broadcasting rights for decades. They are all old hands at televising sports events. I especially admire its college baseball telecasts. Equal to the major leagues coverage in terms of camera work.

Agree Jim Leahey is getting old and sometimes shows it. But he is legend in local broadcasting and winners of numerous awards. He still excels in conveying excitement in his voice and he still "tells it like it is." Colorful and opinionated. K-5 is loyal to him and rightly so. We should give him some slack.

Kind of sounds like Seattle's relationship with baseball announcer Dave Neihaus. In the last few years Dave was increasingly likely to call the names of players who were not even in the stadium much less on the field, but it still doesn't seem like it will really be baseball season next year without him. (Dave died about a month ago.)

KD is a top 5 outside hitter in the country, would succeed tremendously in any conference, and is border line first/second team AA. having said that, hummingbird has no credibility or point. you can't judge a player's worth on statistics alone, especially if you are comparing two players. the fact that you compare KD and Giddens is a flat out joke. KD was BY FAR the best player in the WAC.

I would hope not. I've never tried to go down there, but I would have assumed it was hard to do. I've rarely ever seen a locker room entrance guarded. Sadly, looks like they need to.

Just watched the match, having just returned today from a trip. Washington played very well, and certainly deserved this win. Congratulations. I was very impressed by Carlson and the other seniors. Great leadership, and strong play by them really helped set the tone for the rest of the team. I wish them well against Nebraska. If they continue to play like this, we could expect another upset or two...or three before the tournament ends.

It may help the Wahine host the first and second round if the athletic dept. would not schedule a home football or basketball game during that weekend. One of the often heard comment is that its hard to schedule flights after the late Sunday selection show to arrive at HNL tues/wed. Of course there could be some other sensible alternatives but we are dealing with the NCAA and its clueless vb committee.

One of the often heard comment is that its hard to schedule flights after the late Sunday selection show to arrive at HNL tues/wed. Of course there could be some other sensible alternatives but we are dealing with the NCAA and its clueless vb committee. In a radio broadcast, Shoji mentioned that he spoke with the committee in years prior and he was informed that the Thursday/Friday dates were not factors in getting a bid. Not sure if that makes any difference or not from year to year. However, the athletic department does not schedule basketball for the week Hawaii could host first/second round. The only obstacle would be football on Saturday.

If Thursday/Friday dates are non factors, then its obvious. They hate us.

So, was anything the Portland St. coach quoted validated? Can't really tell how well the block by the MB's was closing from the side website view. Munoz was not exploiting any small block when she was in; Perry had few attempts while I watched her in the first set; they were going to Carlson, with reason. The Portland St. coach told the reporter what was in his team's scouting report of Hawaii. I guarantee it was very similar to USU's and UW's. PSU was just like almost every other team Hawaii played in that they didn't have the combination of athlete and skill to fully exploit Hawaii's weakness'. His comments were absolutely correct though. Some Hawaii fans were offended (they can be very thin skinned), but I would much rather hear a coach talk to the media the way the Portland St. coach did - straight forward and honest evaluation of things (at least as he sees them) - than hearing the canned answers that most coaches will use. With those answers to reporters questions he took fans right into the locker room of his team and all of Hawaii's opponents. I think that is pretty cool, and way more interesting than the "we were just happy to be here" B.S.
