Someone has been kind enough to post the K5 coverage of the match on Youtube. Here is the most amazing rally I think I've ever seen at Hec Ed. If you fast forward to about 2:50 into this clip, you'll get to the serve where UW is up 14-12 in set 1: www.youtube.com/user/UHVolleyBallFanToo#p/u/5/S81d5n9BnpkThat is a classic. Time and again one team or the other saved what ought to have been a kill. You keep watching, waiting for someone to get control of the ball, run their offense, and get a kill (and as a fan, you hope it's your team). They each got some good attacks, too; there was just a lot of fine defense keeping that rally going. This is why I love the sport. Thanks.

So, was anything the Portland St. coach quoted validated? Can't really tell how well the block by the MB's was closing from the side website view. Munoz was not exploiting any small block when she was in; Perry had few attempts while I watched her in the first set; they were going to Carlson, with reason. The Portland St. coach told the reporter what was in his team's scouting report of Hawaii. I guarantee it was very similar to USU's and UW's. PSU was just like almost every other team Hawaii played in that they didn't have the combination of athlete and skill to fully exploit Hawaii's weakness'. His comments were absolutely correct though. Some Hawaii fans were offended (they can be very thin skinned), but I would much rather hear a coach talk to the media the way the Portland St. coach did - straight forward and honest evaluation of things (at least as he sees them) - than hearing the canned answers that most coaches will use. With those answers to reporters questions he took fans right into the locker room of his team and all of Hawaii's opponents. I think that is pretty cool, and way more interesting than the "we were just happy to be here" B.S. Completely agree- its rare for a coach to be that honest and open about his teams strategy, even after a match. All the players and coaches know the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents, but they typically don't share it with reporters. When they do you can learn something about how the opponents view your team- that's good stuff!

I think every coach that wants to emphasize the important of the serve and pass aspect of the game should show the second set of this match. Clinic.

Today I watched several Youtube segments of the UW/Hawaii video from K5 TV in Hawaii. I've said this before, but this video really brings home the outstanding quality of the K5 broadcast. They do a first rate job. The play by play guy is outstanding, his color commentator is excellent. The camera work is great. They have figured out how to do replays frequently without missing ANY of the live action. They talk about what's happening in the game...no meandering stories. They never once said the Libero is wearing a different color uniform and you have to win by two!!!!!!! Every college crew doing volleyball webcasts; every ESPN volleyball crew; and every Fox sports volleyball crew should be required to sit in a room and study that K5 broadcast and learn a few things. And if all TV and web coverage of volleyball was this good, I think a lot more sports fans would get into volleyball. Couldn't agree more. While we in Nebraska are very fortunate to have Nebraska Educational Telecommunications broadcast a great many Husker matches, it is almost painful to listen to Kathi WIeskamp do the color commentary for the games. She takes six sentences to say what she could have said in two. She never fails to have numerous incomplete sentences during a broadcast. And even worse, there are times when she will be talking and in mid sentence just kinda start babbling in a manner I would liken to speaking in tongues. Additionally, she spends way too much time talking about the very technical aspects of the game, such as the proper angle of ones hands for proper blocking technique. And I know she can't do anything about her whinny voice, but her endless monotone drone just makes me want to scream. And that's all I have to say about that.

I was sitting pretty close to that pancake, and, in person, it looked to me like the ball touched both her hand and floor and the up ref immediately made the correct call. I will admit, however, that on the TV replay it really looks like the ball hit only hand.
