I'll probably get killed for saying this, but I think we may be starting to see the slight dip in Stanford's post-season success over the last 5 years (compared to the lofty, likely unrealistic standard the program set in the 90's and 00's with multiple final fours/championships) come into play during present day recruiting. I feel that previously Stanford had an unbeatable combination- the best academics coupled with the best opportunity to win a national championship- in the eyes of many top recruits who also sincerely valued academics. I truly believe that recruits like Lanier would've been a lock for Stanford if this was the mid-2000's. Nowadays, Stanford still offers the most academic prestige among the top volleyball programs, but if a recruit's first priority is the chance to win a national title, I can understand why programs like Penn St, Texas, and USC may be more appealing right now, as they have performed better than Stanford in recent years. Continuing to beat out these programs for recruits like Hodson, who I understand has a family connection (?) to Stanford, may become the exception and not the rule for Stanford. There have always been other national programs to threaten the Stanford hegemony during the 90's and 2000's. There have always been 2 to 3 other programs that get other top players. If anything, winning a national championship at a different school isn't keeping Stanford down, it's the rise of other programs (who probably won't win a NC) recruiting well. Here's a thought, and I know it's complete speculation, but perhaps more and more recruits see Stanford as unattainable/undesirable BECAUSE of the academic standards. Many of the top recruit have a decision made by the end of their sophomore year, some, like in the case of Nebraska, get a verbal right when the baby pops out of the womb. Stanford's academic and admission standards is really a disadvantage. Other than that, I'm not sure WHY recruits these days choose to pass over a chance to be a Stanford grad. As a parent, it's a no brainer where I'd want my child to go, for free!. What is this generation coming to The education is worth the chance one takes having to let some offers go while waiting for final admissions. For MOST it is education first volleyball second when it comes to the opportunity to be a member of the Cardinal.

A little off topic, but the sand facility is more or less done. At least, it's not a construction zone any more. I think the net poles are still in boxes. And I'm not sure what the plan is for seating... Are they going to add bleachers? Or you just spread your blanket over the gravel? Here are some pics.

Stanford and other Ivy league schools are more of a brand. After 10 years in the work force, the pay gap is gone. Please don't misunderstand me, education is important and everyone should go to college. But you learn more after college than during.

I agree most of what you learn in school is not used in your profession. That's not the major point of getting a college degree IMO although some think it should be. In talking to Stanford students over the years, very few come here thinking about how much money they might make. Many students dream about starting their own company but few think about making big money. There are many reasons for selecting a college and every kid has to find the right fit.
To change the subject, I recall Dunning stating something about bleachers being installed. I am not sure about it but I am fairly certain gravel is not the final surface finish for the slopes. Bobbk probably has the answer or can find out.

IMO Stanford is a win win for top volleyball recruits. It offers a top tier academic and volleyball program. It's one of the top schools in the country, is private, well funded and smallish in size with a top 5 or 10 volleyball program in a strong conference with solid coaches. For recruits, it seems a no brainer choice. IMO. and yes that's why they got a lot of top recruits but there is a lot of hysteria over not getting all of them..

My impression of 2 years ago now was the plan called for bleachers like they just installed at the Field Hockey stadium.

I'll try and get over to campus for one of the early practices and give an update, probably either the 16th or 19th. Then, if time permits, I'll hit one of the last two on either the 25th or 26th and report on whether I can detect any improvements.

I'm trying to not state the obvious b/c I know you are waiting to pounce on me. I also have a good feeling about the Huskers this season(they have seem snake-bitten the last two years) .
