The following is from the Stanford WVB website. Did anyone go to tonight's scrimmage. Open Scrimmages Schedule: Tuesday, Aug. 12 – 6-9 p.m. (PG) Friday, Aug. 15 – 3-6 p.m. (PG) Tuesday, Aug. 19 – 3-6 p.m. (PG) Friday, Aug. 22 – 4:30-6:30 p.m. (PG); BBQ at 6:30 p.m. at Jimmy V’s Monday, Aug. 25 – 12-2:30 p.m. (Maples) Tuesday, Aug. 26 – 3-6 p.m. (Maples) The first four open scrimmages will be held in the Arrillaga Practice Gym, located adjacent to Maples Pavilion. Fans are asked to enter through the south door accessible from the Maples Pavilion parking lot. The final two scrimmages will be in Maples Pavilion, and fans are asked to sit in the stands accessible via the main concourse. In case someone else hasn't posted this: According to the website, the only open practice remaining is Friday, 8/22. Bummer because I was planning to check 'em out tomorrow.

How was Burgess's passing? Good from what I recall, but I also don't recall many chances. It could be that the servers were avoiding her, which is probably a good sign. I don't think the servers were getting any specific direction from JD or Denise on who to serve either.

I wouldn't question it as evidence indicates she can pass most junk they throw at her. A certain server from Penn State might cause issues, but no one is perfect.

www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=209606799STANFORD, Calif. – Due to a scheduling change, the Stanford women’s volleyball team will only have one open scrimmage left on its preseason schedule. Don't miss the Cardinal in action on Friday, Aug. 22 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Arrillaga Practice Gym.
I hope someone makes it to the scrimmage on Friday. Are the practices without a scrimmage open to the public?

Went to the scrimmage tonight. The two teams split four sets, although by the fourth set lineups were getting intermingled. The tall male assistant coach played for the second team, getting points at critical times.
It looks like Boukather will start at Opposite. Lutz sprained an ankle, so McGehee will probably start next weekend at MB. Boukather played all the way around while Brown played with the second team and Benjamin was libero for the second team. Either one will probably play backrow for Boukather; Benjamin defense, Brown offense. I suspect Brown will play backrow; a strong pipe attack and good jumpserve, whereas Benjamin was not outstanding on defense, to my perception.
Burgess is becoming a real star. After a shaky start her pass reception was impeccable. On offense a couple of times she returned serve, then swung up and pounded winners. I'm not sure I would trade her for Vansant or Eckerman (particularly with an extra year!) Not as explosive, but better on defense than either, and a growing repertoire of all the shots needed to score points. A legit First Team AA candidate, I think. Inky, too. Her slide is so much better than when Inky came to school it's not (is) funny. Best scene of the night was Inky encouraging the tiny tot ball girl, who ran around retrieving loose volleyballs. All of 2 or 3 years old. Inky and haleigh Washington (PSU) should face off at least a couple of times; should be epic!!! Both very physical.
The big four are maturing and seem better (Howard was taking a few more chances on OOS sets) but whether the team without Wopat and Williams is better is up for debate. Stanford will miss Wopats presence and Williams defense. Boukather is reasonably confident and skilled on offense, and perhaps Brown can dig; if so, she will play and attack from the backrow. Hits the hardest ball on the team for OH. Sideouts will be rarer with Inky on the bench, although McGehee still runs a mean slide. But so does Inky now, and that may be reduced.

Thanks for a great report. It is unfortunate Lutz sprained her ankle. I am a little fearful of the Nebraska match next Sunday. It was moved up to noon which is 10:00 am Pacific time. I can't recall ever seeing a Stanford team play well at 10:00 in the morning. I don't think Stanford will be ready against a Nebraska team which played together over the summer in China. I like Stanford's chances better against Penn State at home the following weekend. I was a little skeptical of Burgess' hitting at the start of last season. She came on like gangbusters the second half of the season. I recently watched video of the Cal game at the end of last year and Burgess was hitting with no fear. Hopefully she starts this season where she left off in 2013. Nerd Nation: www.facebook.com/StanfordWVB/photos/a.10150604239881989.386367.124331396988/10152339521491989/?type=1&theater

Not certain how Lutz injured her ankle, but probably landed on someone's foot. It might be a high ankle sprain, but she didn't seem to be in too much pain. Hopefully no ligament damage. It was iced and elevated right away by the trainer after evaluation. With McGehee at MB2, Stanford will be a faster, more athletic team, more offensive, but perhaps less stout defensively. I think the big 10,000 pound gorilla in the room, vis-a-vis the scrimmage, is how does Stanford deploys Sidney Brown's cannon of an arm swing. She bombs the ball with so much velocity that it would seem prudent to somehow get her into the mix. I could see JD going to Brown as a replacement for Howard in the front row, when/if Howard struggles on offense. Or, as Baywatcher suggested, perhaps use her as a DS so she can blast BICs. Overall, though the lineup is mostly set, with Boukather looking solid offensively at OPP, Inky clearly one of the best MB's in the country, Burgess one of the best two way players in college, Gilbert one of the best L's in the Pac-12, and Howard a very strong two way player and above average blocker.

I am a fan of Morgan Boukather. I watched her during her club days. She was her TCA team's star go-to hitter and a six rotation right side. I saw her match after match carry her club team on her back to victory. She gets to Stanford and becomes just another player competing for playing time. As far as I know she has never complained about playing time.
