Too bad NCAA won't recognize a pairs champion. There is currently a pairs champion. Is that going to change?

When the NCAA takes over the sport in the 2016 season, they have stated there will be a team championship only. While that may change at some point, right now it's highly unlikely there will be a pairs championship held in 2016.

Don't they have separate champions ( team, singles and Doubles) for tennis?? Why not beach volleyball??

Agree. This seems like it should be treated exactly like tennis or track and field. Individuals or pairs win championships, as well as the entire team in those sports.

I remember seeing this in one of the announcements and hope they will reverse course on this. There's a lot of great pairs that won't be a part of the final 8 teams that will be missing out. I wonder if this will affect team sandbagging too. One of the incentives in keeping your pairs sorted properly was that only #1/#2 flights were qualifying for the pairs championships.

I don't want to turn a Stanford indoor thread into a beach volleyball thread, so I'll offer one more comment on the subject: It sucks. On ice. There is no compelling reason for the NCAA to eliminate a pairs championship. It's one extra day of competition. There isn't a huge cost component, and the precedent has been in place for decades with NCAA tennis holding separate championships for teams and singles/doubles. There is much unhappiness at the AVCA and among sand-playing schools, and along with it significant push-back against the NCAA's decision. The NCAA has offered to let the AVCA put on a pairs championship separate from (but at the same site) the NCAA team championship, but that isn't likely to happen, nor is it a satisfactory solution. On one hand, there are a whole bunch of positives in the NCAA recognizing beach volleyball as a "Championship Sport." On the other hand, dissolving the pairs championship is a short-sighted decision that in my opinion harms the sport, primarily for the reasons you outlined above, not to mention removing one of the most entertaining aspects of the championship weekend. Let's hope that at some point, the NCAA decides to bring the pairs championship back into the fold. I do think that will happen, but I don't think it will in 2016.

15 players on the roster. That means five players don't play in tournaments. There is a tournament at Florida International University in Miami.

Thanks for the heads-up nerd. I am puzzled at the moment who it could be based on the timeline of admission's decisions. I assume it is not anyone for 2015 because all the big names are committed. Admission's decisions for 2016 are still several months away, probably June or July.
Bobbk posted he knew of some recruits in their junior year of high school getting an admission decision as early as February but I am pretty sure that was not in volleyball. As far as I know the earliest decision for WVB was in April and that was an exception to the general timeline. Stanford WVB and most olympic sports have a policy of not taking transfer students.

Athletes don't necessarily have to fall into a specific timeframe. Cynthia Barboza verballed to Stanford in March of her junior year but was officially accepted in February.
