Watched a couple of recent videos on Baird. I think her approach has definitely gotten better and she works pretty hard to take a solid approach. Still room for improvement but definitely didn't see too many of the wonky approaches that she did when she was younger. Powerful arm but is also pretty savvy with placement if the set isn't there... her build reminds me of Howard. One of the matches she absolutely demolished a 2 ball. Decent-ish passing but definitely needs work. I think her development will be very important for 2020 and beyond. I don't think she will see a lot of playing time in 2019, but I hope the staff makes sure she's ready to help shoulder the load with Kipp when the Big 4 graduate. This will be a key if Stanford hopes to be in the NCAA Championship mix starting in 2020. And, not to beat a dead horse but I will anyway, the Card will need someone who can competently replace Hentz. When I say "competently", I'm not looking for her numbers and jaw dropping digs, but someone who has Kyle Gilbert like talent and proficiency. There aren't many recent videos of Ku'Ikahi 18s to see how Oglivie is doing against better competition. In the Iolani videos I've seen, her passing is good and certainly she has good reactions on D, but hard to tell how she will do in the L jersey.

Yes, but Hambly must believe Miner is interested. Hambly doesn’t need to see Kipp and Berty. They have already signed LOIs. There were other tournaments to attend today including Reno for a qualifier. It was cold and raining in SoCal; in general not a nice day to travel. I only saw two other DI coaches at the American Sports Center although there may have been some I didn’t recognize. Something motivated Hambly to be here and bring Glass with him. I'm sure he is interested in Miner, but there is zero reason to go to an 18s only tournament in Reno, the 15s play tomorrow, he was already in socal this week to scout younger players and nobody outside of socal would be put off in the least by 60 degrees and light rain. If you are saying he was scouting players earlier in the week that would make some sense for Hambly to be here today. Where was he scouting at prior to today? I mentioned Reno because some of the SCVA 18s teams were in Reno reducing the competitive level of the 18s at ASC. I wouldn’t say there is “zero” reason for Hambly to go to a 18s tournament. It’s possible there are some potential walk-ons who have applied to Stanford we don’t know about. They aren’t going to make any announcement until after April 1 when they find out if they have been admitted. As far as I can tell, the only reason he was here today was for Miner. Do you know of any other prospective recruit he was interested in at ASC today?

There was a 17s and 18s SCVA club tournament today at American Sports Center. I watched Kamerynn Miner for the first time and her Mizuno Long Beach team. Besides being good at setting Miner is quick and willing to sacrifice her body to go after a ball. She reminds me of Hentz in the way she will try to get every ball, even those completely out of reach. I was sitting right behind Baby Jordan, if anyone is old enough to recognize the phrase. Glass and Hambly were glued to Miner’s court. Glass is always smiling and talking. Her personality could make for a good recruiter. Time will tell. I briefly watched Kendall Kipp. Her hitting out of the back row was nothing short of spectacular. She is definitely 6’5”. She needs taller, stronger blockers to practice against. Kipp will be on the court in September. It won’t be at OH. Her passing still needs work. However her offense is so good Hambly will find a place for her. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Baby Jordan attend USC? I would think that puts USC squarely in the running to recruit Kami. She is sort of a tweener as best as I can tell, but very athletic. How do you think she would fit into the Stanford lineup? Kipp is so explosive and has that extra amount of athleticism you rarely see for someone of her height. I really believe she can hit any set anywhere on the front row and defeat most blocks -- even high balls in the middle. As far as back row hitting goes, pipes and D's, I can't remember any USA hitter so good at such a young age. Obviously D Hooker eventually became an incredible/lethal back row hitter, but not sure if she was this good before playing collegiately. Agreed she looks taller than 6'4" as last time I saw her she was talking to Kevin Plummer in the Minneapolis airport and standing next to him I would have guessed 6'5". BTW, I think Baird is a good 6'3" if not slightly taller.

Kami miner is going to Stanford !!! Countless players and coaches I have talked to have confirmed, unless she doesn’t get accepted which is very rare for players that the coaches are offering, because why offer someone who can’t get in, than she will be going to Stanford. She has said to people she is going to Stanford

In recent memory, it seems like Stanford is different from most top programs in that they seldom have two really good setters on the roster. They have generally recruited one clear starter, and a backup, who may never play. In some years, there isn’t even a backup. It will be interesting if there really are two top setters overlapping by two years on the roster. (Stanford has not in my recollection ever had situations like UCLA, where they are deciding which setter to play, from match to match.)

Card was saying Miner was running balls down like Hentz so maybe she could DS and emergency set and hit back row in a pinch in year one if she doesn’t beat out Xu.

Takeaways from yesterday’s SCVA Mandatory.
Kipp - I have seen her skill set develop over the last 5 years. Everytime she gets better and better. Watching her yesterday I was amazed at how much high she is jumping! That girl is a solid 6’5 and jumps out of then Gym. I can see her stepping in right away and contributing to the offense. Her serve receive and passing still needs a lot of work.
Miner - All Out gamer! When she has to pass the first contact her and Iosia run this almost bump set red ball that is absolutely gnarly!!! Miner is the future setter for Stanford. Leadership, athleticism, location, block..... she really has it all!
Side note-
Glass and Hambly spent some watching T-Street 17 and Sunshine 17 although I couldn’t tell what player specifically. I do know they checked out Tuiniga (everyone in the gym did) that girl is amazing.

I also noticed that Kameron Bacon is uncommitted

Tstreet lists her as uncommitted She decomitted recently. Bacon is good but she’s no where near the Talent both Smith’s are. If they are recruiting her, maybe as a walk on? Tufuga is a solid Oppo but she has trouble putting the ball away against solid blocks. But she plays defense well, has great hands and for only being 6ft she puts up a wall!! I don’t really see her playing in the PAC as he’s a bit slow but maybe WCC or BIG West type of player.

I'm a bit surprised to see some of the comments re Miner. She has a solid arm and good hops even if she was going to be a primary hitter. If McClure can be successful at Stanford on the pin, Miner can be. Re the setting situation at Stanford, perhaps they run a 6-2 or Miner redshirts a year....lets also be clear, Xu isn't some second coming of Carlini. If someone better comes in, I think Hambly will play them. Stanford isn't gonna pass up the opportunity to have a talent like Miner on the roster because of Selina Xu. You make room for a player like Miner....every program would.
