When Robyn Ah Mow got pregnant a few months before the 2002 World Championships, Coach Toshi Yoshida picked Jennifer Flynn to set for the US team (who won the World Grand Prix the year before). With the young but fearless Logan Tom, the veterans Keba and Tara Cross Battle, the great Danielle Scott and the ever smiling Heather Bown, Jenn Flynn was given the opportunity to set for some of the world's best players - and she grabbed the chance! We had the chance to reminisce with Jen about her 2002 World Championship experience... Link: www.volleywood.net/?p=8400Just sharing...

The last time I saw her play was during a summer camp scrimmage. She could still bring some heat.

I have heard Jen Flynn (now Jen Oldenburg) talk about her volleyball experiences (during the Illini's coaching staff's "Volleyball 101"). She tells a great story, and has a most engaging personality. She is a great complement to Coach Hambly and Coach Miller on the Illinois' coaching staff.

Jen is a great athlete and an even better competitior. You should have seen her play shortstop.

Those sets make USC's look lightning quick. USA had some great hitters back then to beat the block so often.

Those sets make USC's look lightning quick. USA had some great hitters back then to beat the block so often. Ah, Toshi days... Pass the ball to a comfortable distance from the net, the best hitters win matches so learn to be good at high balls, middles are blockers first before they are hitters, practice out of system plays half of the time during practice, dig and roll, etc. To this day, I still think his coaching regime was a good quadrennial. A pity that it could not end better, and that most USA fans never got to see how good that USA team actually was...

A pity that it could not end better, and that most USA fans never got to see how good that USA team actually was... It was that damn loss to DR that ruined everything!! The most revealing thing about Toshi's era is that it seems like both former and current players have almost always spoken very highly of him. It is a shame that video streaming was either horrible or non-existent during his stint as there was a lot of good volleyball going on. Jen Flynn was an exciting player to watch as a very undersized OH in the NCAA and she turned out to be a solid setter at the next level. She epitomizes what a very competitive, high-energy player should be without being obnoxious or disrespectful to the opponent.
