This is almost a shocker. I would have expected Hawai'i or maybe even UCLA to be in the top spot. But it does make sense for UCI to be there.
UCI only lost two players from their starting seven (liberos count as starters now) from last year. Jablonsky is expected to be a player of the year candidate or even repeat. Of course most are looking to see how UCI rebound from last years horrible playoff snaffu and lost to PSU. They were the best team last year that WASN'T in the final. They should be able to win the MPSF regular season if things workout in their favor. I can't wait for the season. This should be one of the best MPSF seasons in a long time. That is saying a lot knowing how last year played out. SHould be a fun one folks.
Enjoy...(the discussions, to be continued as the year goes on.)

They lose only one player from their starting 7 in Spittle, who averaged the least amount in kills per game. They return 3 AAs. And they didn't lose their libero. Asuka played libero and received first team AA honors over Reft of Hawaii. I can't see why they wouldn't be chosen as #1, especially considering that every other top team sustained a fairly cricital loss.

swingaway, thanks for posting that article. It appears that nobody knows who the other OH is going to be quite yet. We've heard some great play from the 2 potential OHs, Cole Reinholm and Taylor Wilson. Which will Coach Speraw go with the big arm (Reinholm) or the big block (Wilson)?

Ok people let's get the facts right here.... UC Irvine is returning 4 AA and they only lost 1 starter from the starting 7 (Spittle and Rangel replaced eachother for the 2nd outside spot). Filling in that final spot (2nd OH) will be key to whether they can repeat a great performance like last year as well as replacing the leadership and fire that Paul brought to the team. I agree with robonthemic the OH position is still up for grabs. What will Speraw do... only time will tell.

Somebody said on another thread that UCI is thinking of putting in their RS from two years ago (Spellan?)who was out with an injury last year and moving Webber over to OH. If that works, it doesn't seem fair.

Although UCI will, no doubt, be a force to reckon with. It's not just UCI and their prior year. There are many changes in a lot of teams and last years dominance could be this years average.
I see a very interesting year developing.
Good luck to all.

baywatcher, you're referring to Jon Steller. The boy's got a cannon of left arm-swing and a WICKED jump serve. He's listed at either 6-8 or 6-9. From what I have heard he has spent a lot of time in the weight room and it a lot stronger than his 1st year (the year he traded starts with Webber at OPP). I guess the lineup will be unveiled when UCI plays Cal Baptist @ CBU on Jan. 3!

Will Stanford cause any damage to the top teams this year, or will it take another year or 2?

shouldnt be much of a surprise how the rankings came out in the preseason. stanford will be one more year from inflicting some damage. watch out for long beach. i think theyre the sleeper. hawaii is solid. and ucla will also challenge for the title. but the front runner is UCI.
