Ahh. Thank you.
I guess then they need to break the streak of only winning one playoff game!

Of course, after last year's debacle in the MPSF tourney and NCAA Final Four where just about every other top team in the country underperformed (with UCI being the biggest gross offender in both the MPSF tourney and Final Four), I think we should just dispense with the entire men's season and give Scates and UCLA this year's title already. More time to watch March Madness and get ready for AVP season.

It was a great match tonight. Thornton orchestrated a great offense and had clutch one-hand sets off of bad passes for kills & points for UCI. Irvine executed even with what could have been viewed as broken plays. If there was a weakness tonight I would have say service errors but then again it's still early.
Thornton earned that MVP hands down. Mentally, even when Irvine was down (in Game 1 15-20, I think), Irvine regained composure and MB David Smith & Thornton had big blocks on a Beau Peters' dump attempt & Paul George that set the tone for the match. Irvine gets my props tonight!
After last year, nobody can count UCLA out of anything. Coach Scates IS the "Wizard of Westwood" and he'll find a magical mix of players (a concoction?) to contend for the NCAA Championship.

Sorry, I work in Environmental Protection and we cite people all the time for being "gross offenders".

Scates is hiding Matt Wade "behind the blue curtain". He will emerge later in the season when the opposition least expects it!

I forgot to add that it seemed like an odd lineup tonight for UCLA. Projected starters in the middle were Nichols and Diefenbach, however, Coach Scates elected to go with the 6'5" Brett Perrine and Diefenbach (both products of Dan Glen's Newport Harbor HS Sailors and Balboa Bay Volleyball Club). Perrine was an OPP at Harbor and it was odd seeing him play MH-- especially because of injuries that kept him out of key matches in CIF his senior year. He just seemed out of place. Diefenbach is a big kid-- it's apparent he has been lifting. It's good to see him starting.

I thought Jablonsky's serving was a key to the match. In Game 1 UCLA had a three or four point lead, then Jablonsky scored about 7 points on serve, libero Ker was out of the game and UC Irvine was in control. Really bringing the heat on the jump serve. Stats show Jablonsky served more than anyone, and that's a stat I would like to see rather than aces and errors; shows who's serving tough. Webbers numbers were a close second and they were serving back to back. Irvine played a very confident and solid match. Got good work from the middles and setter on some not so great passes. Any of a number of players could have been MVP, depending on your perspective. When UCLA got behind they went into the Al Scates try anything now mode, searching for an answer. Haven't looked at UCLA's schedule, but if they play the better teams early, particularly BYU and Hawaii, there could be a lot of losses racked up again, until a line up is settled on.
