jablonsky had 5 errors total...he must've gotten four of them in the first game alone. i know for sure he got stuffed 3 times and hit one hardcross into the net. way to turn it around jayson.
he was practically flawless the rest of the games. one hit was memorable. during the fourth game, perfect pass, quick set to the outside. jayson gets one on one with bark kowalski blocking. kowalski takes angle, and jayson rises above, ignoring the wide open line, and still goes over kowalski witht he hard angle inside the ten. insane kill!
i think two things were key in terms of game changing moments:
1st ucsb served tough games one and two, but as irvine played better in game 3, the crowd was more involved in making a lot of noise heckling and yelling during ucsb serves. don't know if it made much of a different, but the sb players collectively served more errors and had less heat, with the exception of patak who continued to fire them in.
2nd irvine served tougher as it gained more confidence. ucsb weren't passing as fluidly as they did before. their middles were just dominating with kenedy practically hitting like it was warm ups. but with tougher serves and more pressure as tensions mounted, ucsb's passing slipped a bit and ucsb's wing hitters, especially patak, were forced to hit "shots" rather than just blast away as they did during the first two games. with this, it's also notable to point out that despite having to hit against uci's huge block, patak was still able to get his out-of-this-world share of kills. however, with him having to face solid blocks, he had to hit high and deep which allowed irvine to dig and touch more of his balls.
if patak continued to hit at a clip as he did the first two games, i'm sure his hitting percentage would've been higher than .700! that's how unstopable he was. that man just has a bazooka arm.
what a great game. if ucsb can continue to play at this level, i'm not sure if there are any other teams outside of irvine and byu who can play with them.
