Is Eaton really performing that badly? He's undersized of course, but was pretty darn good in juniors.

Eaton is not a bad setter by any stretch, it's just that our eyes are so accustomed to Hildebrand's amazing soft hands. LBSU humiliated Pepperdine two weeks ago and Eaton contributed tremendously to the victory.

Eaton is a good setter but way undersized for teams such as UCSB and Northridge. Even USC. Winder wasn't there during the Pep game so one wonders if Winder would have made a difference. He did blocking against UCI! Watching Patak, what a beast, LB needs a taller setter who can get a hand on the ball at the net. Just a touch would have helped. I think that if Long Beach gives all the setters a chance, they will figure out which setter works best with which opponent. They each have their strenghths. Long Beach did not humilate Pepperdine, as it went 5 games. Long Beach could not even take CSUN or USC to more than 3 games. But I think that they will as the season progresses. It is a rebuilding year for LB so keep the faith!

Iandolo has great hands and he is working on the block. Got a good jump serve as well. Just not a lot of time on the court. As he sat out as a redshirt last year, needs more game time this year to get consistent with the placement for the go- to hitters. Sets the middle well. Give him time and he will get there. Watched him in the fall and just needs more consistency. Between him and Eaton, the beach should be okay. Remember how hard it is to follow in Hildebrand's footsteps...It is a big job and the hitters were used to him. But even he had to start at the beginning. Go Beach!

Not sure setting is the problem here...more likely bad passing and inexperience are hurting the beach. But since setting has been brought up, and specifically, iandolo, here's what I've heard. Iandolo is from Florida and was not coached like the Cali kids. His main assets are his hands and his height, but he's behind in experience (although catching up). My Florida Region contact told me that he had to always run a 6-2 because he was always the go to hitter. So he was only setting half the rotations. Infact, his senior year of high school ball he hit exclusively because they needed both the hitting but also the passing. he took a team of mostly sophomores to the state semi-final match but lost in 5 to the eventual state champ. He shares the state record for kills ih a final four match with 34. I believe the only stretch that he set a 5-1 was at nationals as an 18. according to USA volleyball, he's trained with Youth national and jr national teams. So maybe when he gets the experience he'll start to blossom. Sounds like the coaching staff needs to get him on the court to get that experience. they can't do any worse than they've been doing.
But remember, as I said the real problem is primarily the passing. Conner Eaton and Adam Schlesinger are both accomplished Balboa Bay setters and the offense is struggling because you can't run much of an offense setting from out of bounds behind the 10 foot line! At the UCSB match Patak had 4 aces in game 2 and 6 for the match. Now maybe he's not a good example because he looks like he can ace Giba, but the beach had trouble with the other players as well.
Fix the passing, beef up the bocking, fix the passing, serve aggressively and did I mention...fix the passing. then everything else will fall into place. Go Beach!

GREAT REMARK/OBSERVATION/SUGGESTION/CRITIQUE/SPEECH tedmoseby! MUCH APPRECIATED! Coach Knipe is utilizing Bittner more than Liles (it seems to me). Is this a classic example of coach wanting the less experienced to accumulate flying hours? Bittner is an awesome MB but I think Teddy Liles has stronger killer instinct. Oh well, what do I know...

Deano is technically the best middle that the BEACH has. From what I heard Valdes is no longer on the team. Unfortunately for the Seniors of Tyler and Teddy this is a very, very young team and has a core that is mostly RS Freshman and Sophomores. Slessinger will never be the man for the BEACH and Iandolo's location is off but has a huge block and Connor is probably the future. His hands are the best but he is small for a right side blocker. There is Klipsche coming in for next year and he is an awesome setter too! Got a chance to work with him upclose at the National level. Just remember you BEACH fans that the last time they won a National Title they had a 6-1 Setter in Jason Stimpfig. I know that the game has evolved and the players have gotten bigger but I thought that I would point in out. They are going to have good nights and like the last couple of nights bad ones. Just remember this team later on down the line because they will make some noise either in the MPSF tournament this season or next year.

Where's Hildebrand? Check out the USA roster and the AVP last summer. Out of shape? I don't think so.

I don't think that any of the setters are the answer or the future right now and think that decision has yet to be made. Given consistent playing time each one will and how the rest of the young team shapes up will help make that decision. These early matches brought out all of the Beach's weaknesses as a young team with so many redshirts and now they have to fix them. Remember it is the passer's job to get the ball to target, the setter's job to make a good set even from a bad pass, and a hitter's job to get a kill even from a bad set.

tedmoseby...from "how I met your mother", correct? very clever name Barney? Is that you? Yes it is ted moseby... and if there's one thing I know it's that Robin is HOT, oh and Barney's a little freaky...oh yeah and you can't teach height, and you can't teach hands...everything alse comes with experience and playing time. Upside is the future. But why do we keep saying who better than who? This is a team game and we should all be pulling for the team to gel and get better. everyone needs to contribute. Go Beach!
