Thanks for the scores. Looks like UCI is putting their better, if not best, foot forward these days. 30-18 is pretty emphatic for a 4th game.

No worries, watcher!
The only downer was game #3 when UCI was down 20-8 at one point. Ryan Adams (OPP) from CSUN, Eric Vance (OH), were ripping balls by the blocks. Kyle Waite (MH) was blocking Webber and Jablonsky pretty effectively. When CSUN got to 26, they just ran out of steam and/or lost momentum which resultantly is reflected in the game 4 score.

See original photo & story at www.mvball.uci.eduFebruary 24, 2007 You gotta love it when the Liberos & Setters get their props (coming from a "has-been" myself) BRENT ASUKA POSTS CAREER BEST 21 DIGS AS NO. 2 UC IRVINE TOPPLES NO. 10 CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE, 3-1 (Boxscore) Irvine, Calif. – Libero Brent Asuka recorded a career-high 21 digs as No. 2 UC Irvine toppled No. 10 Cal State Northridge, 3-1 (30-25, 30-24, 24-30, 30-18) Saturday at the Bren Events Center. Asuka’s career-best 21 digs is tied for second most in the UCI match record book, two shy of the school record of 23 set by James Felton in 1991.The sophomore's 21 digs is the most by a UCI player since rally scoring began in 2001. The 21 digs is also the third most in the country this season. UCI’s Jayson Jablonsky led all players with 18 kills, while adding two service aces and five digs. Opposite Matt Webber recorded 16 kills, an ace and six digs. Middle blocker David Smith tallied seven kills, hit .583 (7-0-12) and had a team-high five block assists. Setter Brian Thornton added 52 set assists, six digs and three blocks in the victory. Sophomore Taylor Wilson came off the bench, sparking UCI with eight kills, four digs, an ace and two total blocks in the final two games. Isaac Kneubuhl and James Lisher each totaled 11 kills to lead Cal State Northridge with Eric Vance following at 10 kills. Kneubuhl led the Matadors with nine digs, while middle blocker Kyle Waite had a match-high six total blocks. The Matadors out-blocked UCI 12.0-8.0. CSUN hit .169 for the match. UCI opened game one with an 8-1 advantage and continued to lead 17-9 before Northridge went on a 9-5 spurt to close within 22-18. The Matadors would get no closer than four the rest of the way as UCI would take the first set 30-25. The Anteaters never trailed in game two, scoring three straight points, including a pair of kills by Webber to pull ahead 11-7. After Cal State Northridge narrowed the Anteater lead to 13-9 on a Waite kill, UCI went on a 4-1 run to push the margin to 17-12. UCI would go on to win 30-24. Game three was all Cal State Northridge as the Anteaters hit .000 (9-9-34). The Matadors jumped out to a 23-10 advantage then watched UCI score the next six points to try and make it interesting (23-16), but the lead was too large as CSUN took the game 30-24. Vance had four kills for the Matadors, while Waite was a perfect three kills in three attempts in that game. UCI broke game four open on a 12-4 run to take a 21-12 lead on three kills by Taylor Wilson and five Matadors miscues. UCI ended the match with a 30-18 third game victory. The Anteaters improve to 17-3 overall and 11-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while Cal State Northridge falls to 8-9 on the year and 6-6 in league play.

Waite and Lischer combined (20-3-29 .586, 10 blocks) held their own -- and then some -- against Smith/Harrell (12-2-23 .434, 7 blocks).
That's not the big story though...the big story is there's been a KYLE WAITE SIGHTING. Get the big guy some more burn, coach!

Just an article about last weeks game between CSUN and UCI.
Anteaters take control, beat CSUN in four games Matadors drop second straight road game Ivan Yeo Posted: 2/28/07 Playing against the second-ranked team in the nation on the road without one of its main weapons, senior opposite Dan Rhodes, turned out to be a very tough task for the tenth-ranked CSUN Matador men's volleyball team.
The Anteaters were in control of all but one game of their Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation match against the Matadors at the Bren Events Center Saturday night, as they defeated Northridge in four games by scores of 30-25, 30-24, 24-30 and 30-18.
"Irvine's a good team," head coach Jeff Campbell said. "They affected our passing and that was the key to the game."
Northridge was led by its two outside hitters, junior Isaac Kneubuhl and sophomore Eric Vance. Both had 11 kills apiece and senior middle blocker James Lischer had 10 kills. Two setters, freshman Sean Pederson and junior Travis Bluemling, both had 22 set assists. The Matadors also got contributions from two sophomores in the wake of Rhodes' absence, as opposite Ryan Adams and middle blocker Kyle Waite had nine kills apiece.
"(Adams and Waite) came in and they played very well," Campbell said.
Jayson Jablonsky paced the Anteaters with 18 kills and Matt Weber had 16 kills. Brian Thornton had 52 set assists and Brent Asuka had 21 digs. Irvine hit .433 in the fourth-game clincher.
After dropping the first two games of the match, the Matadors finally broke out in game three. The two teams traded the first six points, but then CSUN won the next three set points to take a 6-3 lead, forcing an Irvine timeout. The Matadors, though, were just getting started, as consecutive service aces by Adams and a Kneubuhl kill raised their lead to 9-6, forcing another Anteater time out.
A Matador attack error ended the run, but freshman setter Sean Pederson sent a surprise set dump into open Anteater territory and senior middle blocker James Lischer and Vance denied Weber's attack to give CSUN an 11-4 lead. UC Irvine won consecutive sets following the run, but the Matadors then went on a four-point spurt to tame a 15-6 lead. Irvine won two of the next three points, but the Matadors again won the next four sets to take a 20-8 lead. The Anteaters won consecutive sets following the Northridge run, but a three-point run gave CSUN its largest lead of the third game at 23-10.
The Anteaters finally started showing signs of life, winning the next three sets and three more following a CSUN time out to cut the Matador lead to 23-16. Northridge responded with three of the next four sets, and Irvine in turn responded with four of five to get within six at 27-21. Waite pinned Jablonsky on a hit and an Anteater net serve put CSUN at game point. The Anteaters won the next three sets before Vance went off a pair of Anteater blockers to put an end to game three.
Irvine quickly got off the gates in game one, scoring the first three points of the game. CSUN got on the board on a kill by junior middle blocker Kyle Waite, but Irvine was warming up, as it won the next five sets to take an 8-1 lead. Thus the tone was set for game one, as Irvine led by as many as eight on two occasions. CSUN fought on despite the huge deficit, but got no closer than four points as Irvine easily took game one.
Game two saw the Matadors stay with the Anteaters a while longer, though they couldn't get them to break. CSUN trailed 8-7 until Irvine won the next three points to take an 11-7 lead, forcing a Matador time out. CSUN tried to stay with the Anteaters from there on, but couldn't get them to break. Irvine held a 19-13 lead as CSUN scored three straight to cut the lead in half, forcing an Irvine timeout. The Anteaters responded, however, by winning four of the next five sets to get their lead back to six. Irvine led by as many as eight and eventually took the second game.
"We couldn't convert (Irvine's) mistakes, and they were converting ours," Vance said. "We were making too many mistakes."
Rhodes did not make the trip to Irvine after injuring his ankle against UCLA two nights earlier, though Campbell said that Rhodes could be back within the next week or so. Northridge opens up a five-game stretch at the Matadome on Feb. 28, when it hosts the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, followed by a matchup with Cal Baptist on March 2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © Copyright 2007 Daily Sundial

I was very impressed with Lischer, esp. producing offensively, knowing that the UCI MBs were blocking him. Waite (the middle brother) moved surprisingly well. CSUN's OHs are solid players but just couldn't put the ball away consistently, and they were definitely missing Rhodes.
UCI played consistent volleyball. Nothing too flashy except for Asuka's digging and 3 one handed backsets from Thornton to Webber (one of them was a back row set) - CSUN had no idea what hit them on those plays. Serving in Game 1 was especially consistent, which got the team into rhythm. Wilson did a great job off the bench. He seems to play smarter than Reinholm, but with less fire and energy.

Asuka had a great game. The UCI defense in general was very good. They appeared to be giving little attention to Adams and camped on Lischer, Vance and Knuebual. With the outsides hitting around the big block, Asuka was there and controlled some very hard hits.
Waite is starting to get over his timid start. He can hit a VERY hard ball. A little less mobile but he is blocking very well. Lischer is the only one who can slow Lischer down. Even with all the attention he gets, he still produces. We need a strong Rhodes for the team to succeed though. His respect from the opposing defense is needed to open up the outsides.
