Does anyone know why this match is being played in the Gold Mine? There are no other sports going on in the Pyramid that day to my knowledge.
Any Beach fans know?

Could never understand why LBS doesn't use the Pyramid as a priority for its own sports teams. It held a key MPSF 1st round match in the Gold Mine against LMU's Reid Priddy team because of Easter Sunrise services that year and paid a price. Now against UCI they won't have the home court advantage of blaring light strands and an infinity ceiling.

As a UCI fan, I think that UCI still needs to take LBSU seriously if they want to win. We saw what happened the first time they played Pacific.

If anybody should be ready to play in the Goldmine, i would hope it would be Irvine since Crawford Court is similar

Unfortunately the CIF really had no other acceptable location for the girls championships except the Pyramid as they didn't want to go to LA to do it.....furthermore they do pay to use the facility....sometimes it helps to help out the CIF, and it is not bad exposure for the Mid either!

Beach played well and out-served Irvine by acing them 21 times. Lotman on the back-row quick was almost invinciple. They should have kept Pestolesi in instead of Fabry. The line up was working better. Beach ran a shoot to Lotman and Fabry/Pestolesi that was effective but once their passing broke down the OPPs and MHs weren't that effective.
Webber, Thornton and Smith of Irvine get the gold stars of the night-- great all-around performances. The stat sheets aren't up yet but Webber led the way with kills & digs, Smith with BIG blocks, and Thornton was a stud and ran the offense well along with tough serving.
Play of the night: Game 5(?) Beach ran a quick that was hammered by Liles (MH) and everyone on Beach was celebrating, but what they didn't realized is that it was hit hard off of Webber's foot standing back right. The ball bounced back over to the Beach side and landed in the back right corner for point-Irvine. Talk about LUCK!

The play of the night was the two incredible, unbelievable digs by Caldwell during one of many fantastic rallies.

Brain vs. Muscle. Oddly enough, muscle prevailed.

Brain vs. Muscle. Oddly enough, muscle prevailed. allymcbeal, it's odd that you would suggest Irvine is what you refer to as "muscle." Size-wise on paper, with exception of Eaton, Beach is a bigger, more physical team than Irvine. It has been placed on record by Speraw and opposing coaches that Irvine is a smaller team and relies on executing a faster offense, strategic team defense and precision blocking to defeat their opponents. Irvine does not over-power because they can't. They run a balanced attack. It would seem Beach players have the muscle-- look at Liles (6'8") vs. Smith (6'7") in the Middle last night, Lotman (6'7") vs. Jablonsky (6'5"), Harrell (6'5") vs. Alexander (6'7") also in the middle, Pestolesi/Fabry (6'6"/6'6") vs. Reinholm (6'4") at the OH. Irvine's only advantage was Eaton (6'1") vs. Thornton (6'3") from a physical or "muscle" standpoint. The matchup b/w Bittner and Webber was balanced being that they are both 6'7", however if anyone can argue Webber being "muscle" especially with Patak in the MPSF they probably need to reconsider their position. Irvine was the "brain" that won out last night-- not the "muscle."

The play of the night was the two incredible, unbelievable digs by Caldwell during one of many fantastic rallies. Mac, you're right on with that! He was all over the place on those long rallies. Caldwell had the "never say die" attitude-- he just wouldn't the let the ball fall without him making a 150% effort on it! IMO, I was surprised Beach didn't keep him in. I'm sure there has been discussion on the boards for the Watten vs. Caldwell debate but I missed it.
