This match is/was a textbook on the thin line between winning and losing. In the end, USC just made a few bigger plays at pivotal times....especially in the 2nd and 5th sets.
Haley suggested in post-match comments that Hawaii was playing better than USC in the 2nd set, but USC just figured out a way to stay close and get the win at the end. He said if they had lost that 2nd set, it probably would have been an impossible hole to dig out of.
Hawaii had more digs on the night than USC.

I also agree. Kelly knows her stuff and she was prepared quite well coming into this match. I think Kelly can be a very good announcer. She needs (LOL now I'm doing it) back away a little from saying things like "she nEEEds to......" Call the match and maybe rephrase somethings here and there. I also agree with Tom Clen that sometimes its OK to just listen to the crowd noise, the ball hitting the court, the sound of the game. She does not need to fill every single second with verbiage. That said, she really is much better than many give her credit (or lack there of) for. I await the day when TVs come with a "crowd and game noise only" option for sporting events- watching in silence never seems quite right, and besides, on my tv turning off the sound turns on the captions. It shouldn't be much of a stretch for modern technology.

I think I remember some experiment where they did a few college or NFL games with no PBP or color commentary. Just crowd noise and an on-screen scoreboard. I actually think there's a better solution. Just have the announcers better understand how to 'complement' the video, not override it or distract from it. They need to think more like being a really insightful expert sitting next to me at the match. I'd like to hear what they think about key developments int he match. But I wouldn't want them talking to me non-stop during the action. There's a difference which most announcers just can't seem to grasp.

Jupiter did what KACZOR couldn't in 2006! 2007. I know my facts when it comes to USC. It was in 2006. In 2006, USC faced Hawai'i in a Regional Semifinal losing 3-2. Kaczor made it to the Final Four in 2007, but they never had to play Hawai'i Wait a minute, aren't you a Cardinal fan? You should have known it was 06 because in 07 Stanford knocked USC out, not Hawai'i

Three hours later and I am still depressed about the Wahine losing. Even after Hawaii lost the second game I was pretty sure they would pull it out. They seemed to have 2 and 4 in the palm of their hands and it just eluded them. I'm putting this match right up there with the 95 team losing in five. This could have been their year. I feel the same way. It's like with all the upsets that has gone on, this is the year Hawaii could've taken the title. I know you want your team to win a title by beating the best, but defeating USC, Florida/Illinois, Texas/UCLA, Iowa State/FSU would have done just fine for this year. It's hard to swallow a loss after your team is "statistically" better in every aspect of the game. Hawaii even outscored SC (total points) 112-107. Again, it shows that SC just got the points when it mattered the most. Again, at least Hawaii put up a fight, a fight not many (aside from Hawaii fans) thought was even there. Also, after listening to Danielson's post game comments, I finally understand where "playing in the WAC" hurt Hawaii. As she had mentioned, when it was towards the end of a set and they needed a play, it usually was easy to do against WAC opponents, however it is not as easy against good teams such as SC. Being able to be in that pressure situation where you need a kill against a good team at critical times is what top-notch competition on a weekly basis will do. And that's what cost Hawaii the match tonight, being able to get those points at the critical moments of each set - the ending. Aloha NCAA, Aloha WAC, hello Big West.

Good job USC!! Now someone needs to eliminate Texas! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Jerritt vs Haley would be a classic match-up. Darth Vader against Luke Skywalker.

I am really surprised USC won but as a HUGE fan of Southern CalI caution that a very good Pepperdine club awaits.

Didn't one of the TV networks try that a few years ago for a few football games. I think I remember some experiment where they did a few college or NFL games with no PBP or color commentary. Just crowd noise and an on-screen scoreboard. It was in the 1980s. New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins. I watched that game.

A classic match to watch! Not much separated these teams, Kananis comments about how playing in the WAC didn't prepare them for critical match-on-the-line situations were insightful. MVPs for Hawaii- Uiato (great job of isolating her hitters), Croson, Hewitt and the SSC crowd. Problems for Hawaii- too many passes forcing out of system swings, small pin blockers, serves didn't rattle USC. MVPs for USC- Jupiter (comes back from a slow start to hit .270), Hagglund (25 digs), and Fuller (kills at key moments). Problems for USC- slow back row players (other than Hagglund), limited offensive strategy, easy serves.
Since the Trojans were forcing the ball to Jupiter whenever possible, the match pretty much turned on her performance. After a slow start, when she hit every ball cross court (usually right into Hewitt) she finally started hitting line and taking advantage of the shorter Hawaii blockers. USC seemed to have other offensive weapons (Fuller, Olgard, etc) but seldom used them. It was the ultimate match up of two totally different offensive styles, and you had to love the way Hawaii utilized all of their offensive weapons with a wide variety sets.
Congrats to Hawaii, it was by far the best match they played all year at the most important time.

you know why i loved this match so much i think on both sides of the net you could see all the players playing up to their true potential finally playing to the level they are capable of. danielson double double, overheating and all played to the very end. jupiter coming up big in the end. satele bombing away and with little mistakes. the setters setting an outstanding match. hewitt the total blocking machine. williams and olgard imposing at MB. hartong like lightning. croson swinging with no fear. fuller bringing big heat consistently. that's why i love this game! such an amazing job by both teams!

I was torn with who I wanted to win this match.. I would have loved to have seen Hawaii v. UCLA for the title. The two best ball control teams in the country BY FAR. What a battle this match was though, credit USC for being able to pull this one out.

And you're confirming it was in the 1980's. I need my nap. And Geritol.
