If I were to hazard a GUESS about Orozco leaving I would guess it was IL's handling about concussions. If a player isn't 100% concussion free she doesn't play. No helmet, no 99.9%, no anything but 100% concussion free. She's a great player but if the concussions keep recurring she's NOT going to play no matter her talent level. And it's going on a year with recurring concussions. I hope she gets and stays healthy. And you would be wrong. Jaz had a brain stem contusion in the spring and a concussion in the fall. They didn't keep "recurring." She was never rushed back...that is the farthest from the truth.

This is what Hambly said about Orozco in the Spring
Orozco out. Hambly is confident that outside hitter Jazmine Orozco, who suffered a brain contusion in late February at USA Volleyball's open tryouts, will be able to play next season. "It's not a concern as far that we think she's not going to be back for next year," he said. Orozco has not practiced since being struck in the head by a ball at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Hambly indicated the Illini freshman has been ruled out for the remainder of spring drills, which conclude in another week. "She's had a lot of concussive issues," he said. In her first collegiate season, Orozco was called upon to replace starter Laura DeBruler — first when DeBruler missed five early-season matches with mononucleosis and later when the UI's career kills leader suffered a college career-ending torn ACL in the UI's 16th match. Orozco, who appeared in 30 matches, finished third on the team in kills. She capped her freshman year with a team-high 21 kills against Texas in the NCAA Sweet 16, earning a spot on the Austin (Texas) Regional All-Tournament Team. Orozco's head injury ended her first spring training period with the Illini, which Hambly regarded as vital to further developing her skills. "She was going in a good direction and she had to shut everything down," he said. "And she needs the work. This is a time we can get work in." Shuffled lineup. In Orozco's absence, right-side hitter Michelle Bartsch is training on the left side, with backup middle blocker Jessica Jendryk filling Bartsch's regular spot. Hambly said he had intended to give Bartsch some experience at outside hitter anyway this spring. As it turned out, it's become the junior's primary position for the time being. And Bartsch could be utilized, at least occasionally, at outside hitter next season.
So, maybe it has a little something to do with pt after all. Whatever the case, I wish her the best and hope to see her on the court again soon.

If she wasn't 100% and cleared by the doctors she wasn't going to play. And they DID keep recurring as she had multiple ones.

Sounds like Illinois will have two inexperienced Outsides. Talented non-the-less. Birks and Criswell are two outsides that I'm sure many programs around the nation would want to be starting for them, but they will not replace the leadership and experience that Ward, Bartsch, and Orozco had. This is a big blow for the Illini. Will be interesting to see how they respond.

Maybe Penn State will loan them someone. They will have plenty of talent just sitting on the bench.

Ciara Brown, who previously served as setter at the Virginia Commonwealth University Volleyball Program, is supposed to join the Aggies of New Mexico State women’s volleyball team. The Head Coach of Aggies, Mike Jordan, confirmed the news about player’s transfer on Wednesday, January 18 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. blogs.bettor.com/Virginia-Commonwealth-University-setter-Ciara-Brown-joins-Aggies-Volleyball-news-a124162love this quote about her stats: " She appeared in 13 sets and added 59 assists. Moreover, she was credited with 23 digs during the season." Moreover? 23 digs? Hardly news for rejoicing in Las Cruces from those stats. (not claiming to know anything about her. just thought the line was funny)

IL also has Ali Starks who may or may not be on the bench.

Do you think Hambly was taken off guard that he was losing two seniors?...lol. Im sure hes prepared for the adjustment. Weve gone over this before ,the two freshman have been practicing with and against Ward and Bartsch for an entire season...theyll be alright. Good luck to Jaz -best of health.

Tara Roenicke can also play setter. She played setter at Houston her freshman year. Or a possible transfer from U of A? Wait....Amaro is a setter now?

Question is now what does Hambly do now with an open scholarship for next year? Any top level undecideds or players thinking about transferring out there?

stark in my mind has a lot of improving to do before she sees some court time. She may be a late bloomer in her Redshirt Freshman season next year for the Illini. I don't see her competing with McMahon on the Rightside but she could be a similar player to Alex Hunt of Michigan if she sees court time on the left side. Right now I see Birks with a solid spot along with Criswell and Jendryk duking it out for the L2 spot with Orozco gone.

I don't think Jendryk has played any LS at IL. Crisswell & Birks are built like Ward & Bartsch while Starks is more like Orozco. Starks was Iowa Gatorade POY and won the setter skill at the Underarmor AA game last year. If nothing's else may may be the first DS.
