CBS news is reporting that he has died at the age of 85.
Edit: Other reports say he is in "serious condition."

How long did Bear Bryant last after he retired as coach of Alabama? Not very long as I recall.

How long did Bear Bryant last after he retired as coach of Alabama? Not very long as I recall. Less that six months if I remember correctly. Alabama beat Illinois in the Liberty Bowl in December and then he died a few months later.

another bang up job by the media. You mean, by refuting the rumors within a few hours? Yeah, that was a pretty good job.

well it's pretty damn easy to refute the rumors when the family spokesman and people standing in the room with joe paterno tell you that he's not dead. don't exactly need woodward and bernstein to get to the bottom of that one.
cbssports.com was the most embarrassing. a psu blog/news site (onward state) reported that paterno had died. cbssports.com, a national website that really should know better, went on this report and ran their own report that paterno had died (without saying where they got the information from.) a few other news sources did the same, mostly citing the cbssports.com report. then after the paterno camp reported that he was not dead, cbssports.com attributed the false report to onward state and reported that he was not dead. so they basically stole (false) reporting from a local source and then blamed the local source when the info turned out to be bogus.

The art of foreshadowing seems to have been practiced prematurely.

Great coach, humanitarian but the scandal will smudge his legacy The scandal will and should be part of his legacy. Unfortunately, some will make it his legacy.

I won't celebrate his death... or his life.
I grew up in a Catholic family where sexual abuse was undiscussable and... not by coincidence... present. Its dynamics were part and parcel of the Catholic teaching that adults (who hold a higher place in the rigid social hierarchy it prescribes) are not accountable to children. So was what happened at Penn State.

The Penn St. family is grieving for JoePA. I am sorry about the passing of a great coach and Humanitarian. The Penn St. SITUATION however will take years to settle by the time the lawyers are done.
