Isn't that why the serve down the middle is called "Husband-Wife" serve? i.e. no communication.......

#29 – Uh, my call my middle – So when you take the ball away from the player who is SUPPOSED to be calling serve, you can also add the nice touch of not even calling him off, you don’t have to wonder why you no longer have a setter in place. YOU were the setter! HE WAS SUPPOSED to be passing the ball NOT YOU! Extra points for shanking the serve that the rightful player might have passed perfectly. PS: Even if you DO pass it well, its pretty tacky to take it from him/her. Oh, and remember, when you looked over, after you stole the pass and concluded that he/she wouldn’t have gotten it anyway, ADD to that formula, the fact that when they DID call “I go/mine” or the like, they didn’t do that with anticipation of YOU diving in front of them. Oh, the life… Make certain that nothing gets broken, too. I remember calling the ball, taking "my middle," positioning my body behind its path, having already set my platform and the ball was mere inches from my pass, when this hit-happy lad, extended his arms and punched his fist into the top of my hand. Played on, but later the x-rays determined it was broken. Hated losing a month of play and paying for a hospital visit. So, something about not breaking your partner with greedy passing, is on my mind when I read this.

#28 - I just told my partner he’s missed 2 of the last 3 shots for points for the opponent (Yes, he LOVED that recap, but, well, you have to know TBE). So next play he does an angle shot that hits the OUTSIDE of the line for point! Come on!? You’re not good enough to miss that close, SO, here’s one: MISS IN! Keep those shots so a poorly executed one STILL makes it in. You’re 15 minutes of notoriety will still be waiting for you ; - )

hi vb jim! i really do enjoy reading your posts -- in this thread and others -- because i love your passion.
i have a sorta tongue in cheek question for you, but i am sincerely interested in your answer should you choose to do so.
it's been more than 3 years now, and you still have 27 more to go. at this rate, you'll wind this up in 2017. so, my question:
do you regret starting this thread with #100 (rather than, e.g., #50)?

Thanks cvc; I, as you know, love the game and play daily. I feel anyone playing beach volleyball should be SO GLAD they found this sport. It has SO many attributes that are great, I could do ANOTHER countdown! YES, its getting tough as we close in to #1, but every time I play, I learn something new about how to play better or how to appreciate how lucky we are to get to play at our level with fellow players. There are a few people who "kind of take it for granted" and many of these posts are gleaned from their behavior...Or me, behaving badly...thanks again.

#27 - That’s no fair! Really?
Gets a little tiresome hearing a player say “I hardly even hit that ball and it went out”! SOLUTION: Don’t hit it so hard. No ball hit out was EVER hit softly enough! So the wind is at your back! The sun is hitting your setter right in the eyes, etc. You can’t complain when it happens to BOTH teams equally, yet teams do it time-after-time. That’s why they call it BEACH volleyball. Play through it and don’t blame anything on the elements, because they’re there, for BOTH teams, thoughout the game!

#26 - Ball ON! You %$#$%@$%%% !!!. Really? The ball rolled on to your court. KEEP a perspective. It differes from Pearl Harbor as that really was a “sudden and deliberate” attack as stated to Congress by FDR, SO, give them the ball back, WISH you could hit it hard enough to roll your ball onto their courts and be “done with it”. Shrugged shoulders are not necessary.

I was playing in Hermosa a couple weeks back early AM and Phil was on another court training with his crew. He bounces a few balls in a row onto our court, no intent just really bad bounces. I hand the balls over to Adam Roberts who was retrieving them and give him a little stinkeye (plus a smile). Adam says with a grin..."Not much you can say when it is the best player in the world doing it", and I responded "Yep...I got nothing" and laughed.

#25 - Did you hit it out because of the wind or because you hit it too hard? Sound simple, well, not so fast. This one is prevalent in beach volleyball and heard from “sea to shining sea”. The answer should almost ALWAYS be “I hit it too hard”, but my guess is, if stated by the server, (remember, NOTHING needs to be stated when you hit it out, you hit it too hard, period), that a predomince of players will invoke the “wind” card…You see, we’re not playing in a gym, thus the name “beach volleyball”. You take all factors into account when you start to serve, ball pressure, wind amount & direction, location of stance, etc. When you hit it OUT, you hit it too hard. FEW ever state “I forgot to take the wind into account”, just that the “wind took it out”. As a summary, thanks for asking, if you hit it out because of the wind, you really never know if you’ll hit it in again (that old wind!), but if its because you hit it too hard, you just won’t hit it as hard next time.

#24 - Fill your ball up, PLEASE! So you’re going to lay your ball in the sun to inflate it to the correct level? Great, just great. THINK AGAIN! Why not just say you’re lazy? Even in 90 degree heat, you wait at LEAST one game, and probably the rest of your games “waiting” for that ball to be playable. Ditch that “lay it in the sun” routine and go bring your ball up to spec! Your “30 seconds” of getting the air in it AND getting the pressure correct beats out the “sun inflation” game as other go to grab it and you REPEAT (Oh, that one’s flat). Geezzz, make this game easier for all of us, eh?

#23 - Do your opponents a favor, KNOW THE SCORE. They’re working on serve receive. If YOU don’t know the score, get your partner involved, but leave the other team to work on passing and not doing your due diligence on the score! Same old people, same old question to the other side: Score?

#22 – Dumb v. Dumber? –THIS came up recently on a ill suited dink that was easily dug by the opponents. BUT, here’s the drill: Whats worse, a poorly executed or contrived shot that is easily dug or an “over aggressive” unforced error that could have easily been hit into an open area more methodically? I thought so. You can’t compare dumb shots (that are IN) to poorly high-risk shots that are OUT. The ball was still in play in the former. You win with GOOD shots (They’re in) and not with GREAT shots (that may often be out). Of course this varies by skill level. . . IMHO…
