Whoa. What's the difference between "moving up" and "lateral"? If your club team sucks, or you don't want to pay some goomba thousands of dollars in club, so you don't get offered, then you can't play with the "big" girls? How elitist, snobby is that? I'm supposed to feel sorry for the NIU coach, but not UCLA/Minnesota/Florida? Sorry, no difference. Take a look at your perspective here. I didn't say anything about club, did I? Sure you feel bad for UCLA, etc. But NIU probably feels a different sense of loss than UCLA did. Umm UCLA had just lost an All-American, HOF Coach, and the NFOY setter (and only setter on the roster). At the time, UCLA felt a damned deep sense of loss. Before Van Orden transferred in, I believe the plan was to have Todorovic set until Moenoa got on campus.

I think one reason I'm disapointed in what has transpired is that this has started playing out like an extended familiy feud. If the Wisconsin jobs happen for the Pawlikowski's it get more convoluted. Pete Waite coached at NIU for ten years before he went to Wisconsin. He recruited Coley Pawlikowski (nee Johnson) to play at Northern. Coley's dad coached Wincinski at Geneva High School and her mother helps run the club team where Coley and Dan coach. Several former NIU players have coached at the same club as well. The fact that both Lauren's parents played sports at NIU ( mom played v-ball) weaves this into a more personal story. One of the other players who wants out is Jessica Lubic whose high school coach, yes, you guessed it, is an NIU alum and who was shellshocked by her decision. She was one of four players on the 2012 roster from that same club. There are more connections, but you get the picture and sorry of I've beaten this into the ground. And finally, it was ten years since we last received an NCAA bid and after this years bid, I have no doubt that everyone associated with the program thought we had a great shot at running a few appearances together. That chance is gone with Wicinski's departure. To me, the major programs that suffer sinmialr losses seem to be able to recover from these shocks a bit quicker.

It does depend on your own personal definition of 'crummy', but several conferences you listed are ranked in the top 1/3 of all the conferences most years. Is above average=crummy? Umm... yeah. The bottom 90% of DI collegiate volleyball programs can't compete with the top 5%. So, while there are some programs that are above the #150 RPI mark, that doesn't mean that they are strong programs from strong conferences. Wow, you better start calling the NCAA and tell them all of the reports that they got of teams in the bottom 90% that beat teams in the top 5% were erroneous score reports.

Alot of times kids transfer when a Head Coach changes jobs, or Asst. Coach becomes Head coach, but to transfer with an Asst when they become another Asst is unusual! If Wicinski goes to Wisconsin she might be in for a rude awakening. Not saying she isn't a great player, but playing in the Big Ten and playing in the MAC are two completely different levels of competition. When Urbanek followed Pete from NIU, she went from being an all star outside to playing only back row for the rest of her career! Just need to be careful what you wish for! It sad that this is all about ME, ME, ME instead of Team and school loyalty! But it happens all the time!

I think we all need to remember that nothing had happened. All of this is speculation.
Here are the few things we do know --
1) Several players have asked for transfers from NIU 2) Coley and/or Dan apparently did interview at Wisconsin 3) NIU team meeting was held saying that there had been no offer and there were no plans to leave
We do not know why players are leaving; we do not know where they will try to go; we do not know about any connection between players leaving and potential destination of assistant coaches; we do not know potential hiring of assistants at Wisconsin is contingent on transfer.
What gets lost in all of this is the fact that Wisconsin has a very good assistant still in place. There is only room for one assistant to get hired. A job for only one of them may keep Coley and Dan from considering the position (if/when it is offered).

There may be only room for one but Wisconsin has done this in the past with the Bayers. One coached and the other volunteered and worked at Capitol VBC. Perhaps, if hired, one of the Pawlikowski's can volunteer and work at Capitol.

Dave does not work at Capital - he is the club director and runs the place.

Dave has known Ray Gooden (NIU) and Shane Davis (Loyola) for a long time. I don't think either of the Pawlikowskis will be working with Capitol VBC without a endorsement from those two coaches.

Well obviously you are not from the Chicago-land area or you would know (as many others do) what I am implying.
Good luck to Wisconsin with their new hires.

Wait...if Ray and Dave are "good ole boys" then how does this situation go down? Ray is (we are assuming) getting cannibalized by a program where Dave used to work and his wife currently works...is that just the way this sport is?

Dave and his wife have nothing to do with the hiring of coaches or the potential acceptance of transfer athletes. Both those fall on the head coach. To be fair, going from NIU to Wisconsin, regardless of your personal opinion of the state of the two programs and their respective conferences, would generally be seen as a step up. I am not sure you can really fault Coley and Dan for trying to advance their careers.
What makes this all very messy is the potential tie-in of transfer kid(s) and two coaches possibly going into a place where there is only space for one.

Do we even know if they for sure took the job up at Wisconsin? Last I saw was that they told the team they weren't leaving and their name is still on the NIU roster.
