I was surprised a bit as all the media was talking about him getting the green light to return to play. Very curious if anyone will touch him fearing another serious injury...

If Manning was healthy enough for a %100 contribution to the NFL, would the Colts release him? Lets think about that first...

In baseball, some pitchers make the transition to a different style after a major injury takes away their original style... and some don't. The jury is still out on Peyton making a similar transition... it's not just the risk of a traumatic career-ending injury but limitations on his overall physical ability that would show up in his passing. Betting $28M up front (to keep him past this week) would have been a crazy risk for the Colts, who held the top draft pick in a top-heavy draft. When a player accepts a non-guaranteed multi-year contract... the only kind of multi-year contract the NFL collective bargaining agreement allows... they do so with the understanding that their team may leave them by the side of the road if they're not worth it.
Comparing Peyton to Joe Montana, who moved from the 49ers to the Chiefs, might be more accurate than the people making the comparison intend because Montana's career ended with a traumatic injury... a severe concussion that almost killed him. He was in agony, even on the jock scale, lying out on the field and wondering if he'd die. Before he signed with K.C., I wonder how many doctors told Montana to retire instead. More than one, I bet.
