I was at practice both yesterday and today. They worked heavily on passing both days. Today was MUCH better. Will it be good enough? I guess we'll see. I know these two days were the most vocal I've seen Kevin. The most intense practices.

Open invitation for all ypu VT's out there. Stop by the post match reception area after any home match and we can trade opinions and insults face to face. I imagine at least some of us Illini posters know each. I think more of you know who I am than I do you. So stop on by, it's free and open to everybody, even players.

After being in Dayton to watch all three matches last week-end, I was most disappointed by Conard's passing. I realize she is a true freshman, and I have got to attribute her passing problems with the already mentioned case of freshman jitters. But, Conard was so solid passing in the intrasquad match, I had hopes for her being a big part of the answer for Illinois' passing problems. AND, I think she will be an answer as she settles in.
Conard's passing wasn't awful in las weekend's matches, it just wasn't spot on, right up to the setter, as it was at the Alumni match.
I did enjoy watching the reserves doing their choreographed celebration routines. I have only really noticed Penn State and Illinois reserves doing that sort of thing. Hopefully, the reserves will get to party alot more in the future than they did last weekend.

Well at least it's not a Luhrsen rant. The best thing you can do is forget the Alumni match and relax. The players had little pressure on themselves and could relax. Plus some of the players DO read VT and I'm sure they pass on any comments.
As you said Conard IS a true freshman. Playing in her first match, against a very good team, in a hostile environment. Plus, as stc said, Beltran is the ONLY experienced back row player. Players are going to feel LOTS of pressure to do well.
I'm disappointed in the losses as well but it's still early. We've got too much talent for this to last all season. If it does I'll join you in the bitch parade.

I don't know about getting to know other VT posters after the match at the reception area. I sort of like being anonymous. I can post outrageous things with less accountability that way.
Also, I am not so sure I want to get to know the coaches and players personally. I think personal friendships would make my comments less objective.
I like being an anonymous observer and commentator.

You can always go to the reception and tell everyone that you're Anastasia Beaverhausen. Nobody will know your moniker unless you tell them.

Just come over and we call each other idiots. Have some munchies and a drink.
You're not going to come off any worse than me.
I know the players and coaches and you can see I still post outrageous stuff and they haven't banned me yet. Kevin has asked me not to post a couple of things before they went public. But their all nice and put up with me.
And how are opinions obfective?
And if you still want to keep anonymous just come by.

McMahon played the back row in the first two games , and Wolf played back row for McMahon on Saturday against Ohio. Not sure if your post was suppose to be completely sarcastic but it just wasnt that bad. They are all new to each other and most of them have have minimal experience at this level and in this kind of a spot light BUT they will be just fine. The 3 outsides were outstanding 6 rotation players before college. They know how to pass- that skill doesn't just disappear ,but the nerves will. Assuming this was in response to my post....it sounds like you might have interpreted "passing" to mean playing defense? I was actually talking exclusively about serve reception, which I believe is the more common usage of the term in this forum. (I hope that doesn't sound condescending if you already knew this. There was a time when that distinction wasn't entirely clear to me...) Anyway, you are certainly correct that McMahon and Wolfe were both used in the back row. However, they were almost always "hidden" behind somebody else when Illinois was receiving serve. That is all I meant when I said they were "not really asked to pass". Here are the serve receive totals for the first 3 matches (excluding 5 short serves that were played by the middles): 68 Birks 43 Beltran 37 Criswell 20 Conard 20 Stark 19 Abrahamovich 1 Wolfe

Thank you for acknowledging that you werent trying to be condescending, I was growing accustom to just getting railed on if I disagree..lol.but yes I do understand the difference . I actually was just trying to respond in general to address the negativity. The post soon after talking about what a long season it will be.The girls are a young team without an obvious leader and they need one asap. I realize it will happen naturally in time, we are just an impatient bunch...but no need to right them off so easily. Kevin is a good coach and he stays calm so the nerves will leave sooner than later because of his demeanor. We all got spoiled last year because of their success. I really believe, in time, this group will dominate they just have to get comfortable with each other. We just have to hope its sooner than later

Very good post. See, I don't always disagree with you. I just like to argue. Come by the reception and we argue some more.

No doubt, those were some unduly harsh words on my part...mea culpa. I never drank the orange koolaid before the season, largely due to the transition as well as the difficult schedule, but I am in in total agreement that this team, going forward over the next 3+ years, will accomplish some great things before all is said and done.
