Yes, I saw Barboza play at the Pan Am Games and she did play well but the role she played on that team is much different from the role she plays on the A team. Has she been a threat from the service line? No. I get it, there are a lot Barboza fans on this board. I'm sure she's a great person but she hasn't demonstrated that she's great on the court. She didn't make the 2008 squad over Glass, Nnamani, and Willoughby and four years later she isn't even in the first off the bench backup position. During her pro season she split time on the outside with a player 4 years her junior. Granted she's got plenty of years left in her to play pro she's had ample time to get to that next level and has failed to do so. @usvolley16, she really can? So when you say with the best of them I'm going to assume you mean the best of them who are the likes of Calderon, Gamova, Flier, Sheilla, Hooker, etc...... be real, she couldn't hold a candle to them. Holy Christ I meant in the USA gym, which is what this thread is primarily about.

That's a bizarre hypothetical. If we were going to take Hooker out of the back we would just revert to the double sub. (ESP. If Berg is setting front row)
I understand the theoretical basis for why Barboza makes sense as a service specialist but at the end of the day it doesnt work in practical application we just don't score points on her serve. No matter who she's coming in for and what the rotation is, it seems she gets sided-out more often than any server she is replacing, in addition to some potent serves (kglass haneef) that could be in that spot instead. I kept on wondering last international season when Hugh would crunch the numbers and move away from that.

It won't satisfy some posters if she makes the team, many of you will say that she shouldn't have when we see her with the team in London. None of the other Outsides are better than her in the gym after Tom, Larson & Hodge. Kim Glass is the next option and she barely played this past season. Alix Klineman provides a ton of hitting, but is she better than Hodge? Who brings something different to the team?

To not bring Barboza would prove to be a fatal error if Larson or Tom were to get injured before play finishes. USA would then place serve receive responsibility on Hodge and it will be just like Beijing when Kim Glass had to pass just about every ball, and not very well I might add (except against Italy). With Hooker and the middles that Team USA possesses, ball control is the chief concern from the outsides. Barboza > Hodge

Cynthia would be a great addition, along with Klineman and Tom. She provides great defense and passing, and she can hit from the backrow as well. I don't see why she would not be on the roster.

Never said she wouldn't, just that if USA depends on her to pass the ball then it's going to be a very long Olympiad.

I love Cynthia, but I don't think on the international level that she can be effective at anything other than the back row and even at that, she has got to compete with the passing and all around play of Logan and Larson and the back row attack of Destinee. I just don't really see where she fits in.
On a totally different subject, please tell me that Nicole Davis will not be the libero for the Olympics. Surely there is someone better.

And yet you would wonder why Megan gets less playing time than Cynthia...

When the time comes, Hugh will have the last say as to who will play for U.S. Olympic team in London.

My bet is that Scott will be on the roster.
