Technically it is not addictive as you do not gain a physical dependency to it, and do not suffer from withdrawal symptoms from the drug, just the return of whatever aches/pains it may have been masking. As for side effects, 2 of the bigger ones would be gastric ulcers (especially if taken consistently on an empty stomach) and kidney failure. Is the use of Ibuprofen common in club ball?

Apparently, I mis-read the thread. It is about the abuse of drugs in college volleyball................ there's not much else to say... moving on. Good.

Not sure how common it is, but I have known more than a few club players(mostly older hitters, and men more than women - and increased when you get to college age) that pop some form of NSAID like their Flintstones vitamins due to joint pains and swelling during tournaments, and multi-event days

With the overuse injuries and the cement floors under sport court. I have seen some kids with the costco size bottles in their bags and the pop like 3-4 every few hours.

Well, I certainly wasn't thinking about Advil as a "drug" when I started this thread, but that's a lot of pills! When my kid played, it was common for her to take one or even two before bed after playing a long day.

I bet if you looked in open level club team's backpacks you would find 6 or 8 girls with ibuprofen. And the girls who don't have any, mooch off the girls who do.
It is very prevalent and it starts around 15.

As do the coaches fighting their hangovers. Really though, once we turn 30-40 years old, aren't most people using nsaids with their morning coffee to get themselves to work? If caffeine and anti-inflamitories are the problem then I think we can rerun that old war on drugs ad "I learned it from watching you!" www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-Elr5K2Vuo

Maybe it would be a good question to ask coaches during the recruiting process....what are their rules about alcohol (since it is the most common use by vb players). Some teams are dry during the season, some have rules about before competition (night before), some include before practices etc......
