USC
• Starters Leaving: (Outside Tony Ciarelli; Middle Steven Shandrick)
• Starters Returning: (Setter Micah Christenson; Middle Robert Feathers; Libero Henry Cassiday; Outside; Opposite Tanner Jansen)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Setter- Michael Mullahey (SCVC)
o Outside- Chris Orenic (SCVC)
o Outside- Alex Slaught (MB Surf)
o Libero- Brooks Varni (SCVC)
• 2013 Preview: USC should have trouble finding replacements for All-American and National Player of the Year Tony Ciarelli and Middle Steve Shandrick. With that being said USC has many young returning players who have made an immediate impact in 2012. Freshman of the Year Micah Christenson has been great for them the entire season and should lead this team for the next 3 years. Robert Feathers has been a blocking machine in the middle and can hopefully produce again next year. If USC can find replacements for Ciarelli and Shandrick then count on USC to be towards the top of the pack next year again. I expect 6’6 opposite Tanner Jansen to step up next year similar to how he did late in the season. I could see 6’7 freshman Austin Rysyk taking a starting spot next year as well.
BYU
• Starters Leaving: (Opposite Robb Stowell; Setter Joe Kauliakamoa; Middle Futi Tavana)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Taylor Sander; Outside Josue Rivera; Libero Jaylen Reyes; Middle Russ Lavaja)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Opposite- Ben Patch (MVVC)
o Middle- Bennett Bird (Seaside)
• 2013 Preview: BYU certainly won’t be the same team they were this year. They lose three big players, setter Joe Kauliakamoa, opposite Robb Stowell, and middle Futi Tavana. All three were amazing for BYU. I count on 6’8 opposite Ben Patch starting next year and possibly winning freshman of the year he is a big oppo with a big vert and should be very productive. Oh and by the way, they return Taylor Sander so they should not be too worried.
UCLA
• Starters Leaving: (Setter Kyle Caldwell; Middle Weston Dunlap; Middle Thomas Amberg; Opposite Nick Vogal; Outside Jeremy Casebeer)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Gonzalo Quiroga; Libero Evan Mottram)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Setter- Steve O’Dell (Pace Bootlegger)
o Middle- Kyle Palmer (Servite)
o Middle- John Zappia (Mater Dei)
o Outside- Nick Porterfield (MB Surf)
• 2013 Preview: Two words, Losing Everybody. They lose every position player except their libero Evan Mottram and outside Gonzalo Quiroga. I thought Quiroga was very mediocre this year and he did not impress me as much as in 2011 so he needs to turn it around in 2013 for UCLA to be a legitimate team. They do have some young guys that should develop and could possibly make this team competitive next year. I know they have a 7’0 outside Robert Paige who is developing slowly. It was so much fun watching this team play in 2012 because how big they were and how many people they would stuff block but being from the L.A. area I will not be going to as many games as I did last year.
UCI
• Starters Leaving: (Opposite Carson Clark; Middle Dan McDonnell)
• Starters Returning: (Setter Daniel Stork/Chris Austin; Middle Scott Kevorken; Libero Michael Brinkley; Outside Kevin Tillie; Outside Connor Hughes)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Middle- Andrew Benz (Balboa Bay)
• 2013 Preview: The 2012 champions will look to repeat this year and they have a great shot at doing it. They do lose their stud opposite in Carson Clark who should be replaced by 6’4 opposite Zach LaCavera and they lose middle Dan McDonnell who was great for them in 2012. They will have a great core of players coming back, not sure who will set for them next year. Connor Hughes was great for UCI and it is great for them to possibly re-peat next year because Hughes and Tillie who was top 5 in the nation in kills per set will be returning and should be dominate for UCI come next year.
Stanford
• Starters Leaving: (Outside Brad Lawson; Libero Erik Shoji; Setter Evan Barry; Middle Gus Ellis)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Steven Irvin; Opposite Brian Cook; Middle Erik Mochalski)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Setter- James Shaw (MVVC)
o Outside- Madison Hayden (The HBC)
• 2013 Preview: Stanford loses some great talent and probably one of the best liberos we have seen in Erik Shoji, also lose outside Brad Lawson who was a force on the pin for them last year. Steve Irvin, Brian Cook, and Mochalski will have to pick up the slack from last year a little bit and 6’8 setter James Shaw will have to adjust into the MPSF fast similar to how Micah Christensen and Matt West set eat for their teams last year. I think that Spencer Haley a 6'8 middle who was a freshman last year will be great for this team next year and make this team really good. If him and James Shaw can step-up big time for Stanford next year they will be a fun team to watch.
UCSB
• Starters Leaving: (None)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Miles Evans; Outside Austin Kingi; Opposite Matt Marsh; Middle Dylan Davis; Middle Ryan Thompson; Setter Oliver Deutschman; Libero Chad Kingi)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Libero- Parker Boehle (MB Surf)
o Setter- Jonah Seif (Legacy)
o Setter- Andrew Kocur (Crush)
o Outside- Jacob Delson (Legacy)
• 2013 Preview: VERY YOUNG. No one really stepped up for this team last year and they need someone to help Dylan Davis. They had probably one of the most underrated freshman classes last year in Matt Marsh, Austin Kingi, Spencer Buckley (redshirt), and Ryan Hardy (redshirt). Being from the L.A. area I would drive up to see this team play and they are going to be great in a few years. They are my biggest Dark Horse for next year. I know 6’8 opposite Matt Marsh will develop and become a great player for them next year. They also had a freshman outside 6’6 Spencer Buckley who had shoulder surgery last year but dominated previous to the surgery and could be a big factor to fill that void at outside hitter next year that they need. If those two players or 6'4 outside Austin Kingi who played a bit last year can develop fast along with their other freshman and they are matched up with guys like 6’9 middle Dylan Davis and Miles Evans they can be a contender as early as next year.
Pepperdine
• Starters Leaving: (Outside Chase Ross; Middle Matt Pollock)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Joshua Taylor; Opposite Maurice Torres; Middle Matt Tarantino; Setter Matt West; Libero Mike McMahon)
• Top 2012 Recruits: None
• 2013 Preview: Pepperdine was actually a relatively young team having three sometimes four freshman who started for them last year (Josh Taylor, Matt West, Matt Tarantino, Scott Rhein). Next year they only lose their middle Matt Pollock who will be replaced by 6’9 middle Nikola Antonijevic who was sidelined with shoulder issues and outside hitter Chase Ross who will be replaced by Scott Rhein. They had the top freshman class last year and I can see Pepperdine making a lot of noise next year.
LBSU
• Starters Leaving: (Libero Kyle McElderry; Opposite Jim Baughman; Outside Brad Hemmerling; Middle Ryan Meehan)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Taylor Crabb; Setter Connor Olbright; Middle Colten Echave)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Outside- Chet Radish (MVVC)
o Outside- Eric Ensing (Legacy)
• 2013 Preview: Long Beach State will be a dark horse next year and should exceed a lot of people’s expectations. They have some great returning players in Taylor Crabb and Connor Olbright and I think that the people that will replace their 2012 seniors will be just as good if not better. John La Rusch is a great opposite who got some playing time at opposite and will be a great player next year.
CSUN
• Starters Leaving: (Outside Matt Stork; Setter Daniel Rodrick)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Brandon Lebrock; Opposite Julius Hoefer; Middle Jared Moore; Middle Drew Stalker; Libero Charlie Condron)
• Top 2012 Recruits: None
• 2013 Preview: CSUN had some crazy setter issues where they had three different setters playing all season. I expect 6’4 setter Travis Magorien to start next year he played great whenever I saw them play. Not sure who is going to take Stork’s spot he was a legend for some reason at CSUN even though he had a poor 2012 season. CSUN does return a lot of juniors and could be a great team next year if they figure out their setting.
UCSD
• Starters Leaving: (None)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Vaun Lennon; Outside Carl Eberts; Middle Sebastian Brady; Fred Stahl; Opposite Johl Awerkamp ; Setter Garrett Dempsey; Libero Chase Frishman)
• Top 2012 Recruits: None
• 2013 Preview: UCSD had their longest MPSF winning streak in school history, 5 games. This may seem unimpressive but this shows that this team is starting to become a lot better. They were led by 6’5 outside Vaun Lennon who was incredible for them in 2012 and will have to lead this team the next two years and hopefully get their first MPSF tournament bid and make some noise next year. This team is also very young do not forget that they had a majority of their roster that were freshman.
Pacific
• Starters Leaving: (Middle Sean Daley; Outside Flroain Gornik)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Taylor Hughes; Middle Christian Ahlin; Setter Patrick Tunnell; Libero Javier Caceres; Opposite Adam Troy)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Libero- Griffin Ender (Legacy)
o Middle- Marty Ross (Ultimate)
o Outside- Giovanni Llinas (Puerto Rico)
• 2013 Preview: Pacific had one of their best years in program history finishing just short of making the MPSF playoffs. Their loses are quite valuable and need replacements but they should find some decent players to step up. They have a 6’9 freshman middle last year who played in a few games and did a great job so I expect him to start next year. Pacific though is not recruiting those high caliber players that they need to put them over the top just yet.
Hawaii
• Starters Leaving: (Outside Steven Hunt; Middle Jarod Loafy; Libero Nick Castello)
• Starters Returning: (Outside JP Marks; Opposite Johann Timmer; Middle Nick West; Setter Sam Biscaro)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Middle- Stephen Maar (Crush) - Decommitted
o Libero- Daniel Aina (Pilipa’a)
• 2013 Preview: The latest news from Hawaii is that it is going into chaos there and that many players have asked to leave and are trying to transfer. Their top recruit Stephen Maar (above) actually decommitted apparently so that is a huge hit to their program. Not sure what exactly is going on and why people are wanting to leave but if these rumors are not true I can see Hawaii being decent next year. They lose their stud Steven Hunt who managed to get every kill last year for them but they have a lot of young talent. They have a lot of international players who are high jumpers and great volleyball players such as 6'6 JP Marks.
Ohio State
• Starters Leaving: (Outside Anthony Hock; Opposite Shawn Sangrey; Outside Mik Birzens)
• Starters Returning: (Setter Peter Heinen; Middle Grayson Overman; Libero Michael Piechowski; Middle John Tholen)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Middle/Opposite- Mitchell Vallis (Balboa Bay)
o Middle- Driss Guesseous (MB Surf)
• 2013 Preview: Ohio is losing their best player the last few years Shawn Sangrey who will be tuff to replace. Losing both outsides is difficult but they are returning a few players that should be key to their success next year. They will need to find some people to fill their pins and if not it should be difficult for them to compete next year. 6’7 outside Michael Henchy was a valuable player for them at the beginning of the season last year and he will most likely start next year.
Penn State
• Starters Leaving: (Outside Joe Sunder; Setter Edgardo Goas)
• Starters Returning: (Outside Jace Olsen; Opposite Nick Goodell; Libero Connor Curry; Middle Aaron Russell; Middle Nick Turko)
• Top 2012 Recruits:
o Opposite- Andrew Roberts (Yorktown)
o Outside- Spencer Sauter (Ultimate)
• 2013 Preview: Joe Sunder and Edgardo Goas seem like big assets leaving next year but Edgardo Goas will be replaced by 6’3 setter Taylor Hammond who comes from Santa Margarita in so-cal who dominated his senior year of high school and was an All-American. 6’7 Jace Olsen will have to pick up the slack from last year because he is going to have to replace Joe Sunder who was pretty stellar for Penn State the last few years. I do not think that Penn State should have trouble being a contender next year and they will win their league and make it to the final four like they always do.

• Starters Leaving: (Outside Tony Ciarelli; Middle Steven Shandrick)
