Because of the three to eight hour delays on the west coast, if you don't religiously avoid ALL news programs (including NBC News!), other sports programming/channels, newspapers (online or hard copy), and social networking, you risk being exposed to spoilers telling you results before being able to view "live" or "prime time" events. So far, I've had spoilers deflate the suspension of featured prime time events on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday (this evening)... What does it matter? The only events they show in prime time are gymnastics and swimming.

Last night I saw the positive side of a "packaged" broadcast while watching the men's gymnastics team final which otherwise I probably would not have been able to catch. The range of emotion was unprecedented, from the joy of Great Britain thinking it had won the silver to the images of the Japanese coach handing in his appeal along with a wad of cash. Priceless!!! ;D Yes, that was amazing to watch. In retrospect it was obvious that they had the cash (in US dollars!) just sitting there in order to file a protest if necessary. I guess that must be on the pre-event checklist: rosin, tape, big wad of US dollars clipped together with a paper clip, flag in case we win,... Apparently the deal was that they get the cash back if the win, but otherwise the judges get to buy several rounds at the nearest pub? If so, it's pretty surprising that the judges would decide in favor of the protest.

The only events they show in prime time are gymnastics and swimming. My wife is so frustrated. I have some time off, so I get to see a number of events during the day. She gets back from a busy day and all she gets to see are hours of gymnastics. Swimming isn't so bad because they don't really take up that much time to broadcast and they only show the semis and finals. Last night, we saw such important things like the parents and coaches taking pictures of the team with their index fingers in the air instead of such inconsequential things like even a brief highlight of the US skeet shooter who broke several records in hitting 148 out of 150 targets. Even better, why oh why couldn't they have shown highlights or, god forbid, the pivotal match involving the US Judo wrestler Travis Stevens who, despite a wound over his left eye, fought the defending Olympic champion to a scoreless draw in the semifinals and collapsed after the match -- only to have to fight the bronze medal match shortly thereafter. I found it truly inspiring. www.latimes.com/sports/olympics/la-sp-oly-judo-20120801,0,7787321.story

So they preempt the second set of Misty and Kerri's match so Bob Costas could show everyone what a great day Great Britain had. Very nice.

It's taped. They aren't pre-empting anything. They are doing what they always do -- milking the drama and stretching out the event to keep viewers.

they didn't stretch out the event, they cut out part of the event. The event was Americans, with a real chance for gold, not "a special day for Great Britain"

What did they cut out?
They came back for the beginning of the 2nd game.
How is that not stretching it out? They took the break between games and inserted another event.

Check out their "highlights" from today's almost-had-a-stroke USA/China match: www.nbcolympics.com/video/volleyball/highlights-u-s-women-beat-china-3-0-in-group-b.htmlI guess at least it's an improvement over their NBCUniversalSports highlight reels of past FIVB tournaments, which were so bad a 7th grade pep squad sitting down to an iMac for the very first time could put together better promo footage. I remember watching the screen in total disbelief as the "highlights" consisted of thinks like service errors and ball handling errors and attacks that went five feet wide of the sideline....

Seriously, the prime time coverage has become unwatchable for me. I don't care about Johnny Pommelhorse and his quest to save the family house. I just don't.
The Olympics (prime time anyhow) have become an event for people who really don't like sports.

You aren't really being fair, you know. You are complaining because they are not showing the pool play rounds of volleyball instead of the gold medal finals of gymnastics and swimming. That's silly, actually. Only the volleyball fans care about the pool play. I have no doubt the medal rounds will get more coverage, especially if the US team is still undefeated.

I'm being plenty fair. The swimming qualifiers are on prime time. The all-around qualifiers are on prime time.
But it's more than that, because it's not just the events they are showing. They are filling their schedule with crap. It'd be one thing if Michael Phelps were actually an interesting human being.
This is all a question of excess. There's TOO MUCH of it. And gymnasts and swimmers are not the only ones who have personal stories. How's this for a story? How about ALL the players who have to play overseas to make a living?

That's the thing, too, the gymnasts are 16 years old. I'm not particularly interested in the life story of most American 16 year olds.
There are a number of sports in their medal rounds which get absolutely no coverage with athletes who have gone through REAL adversity, who have fought through something slightly more difficult than their bff unfriending them on facebook. Or, athletes who are genuinely great at their sport, setting all-time records.
And, seriously, why do they spend so much time on the men's gymnastics? I don't remember that ever being popular. Is it a reverse-discrimination thing? I mean, I get the school-girl drama for non sports fans of the women's gymnastics team and the fact that the team is actually good, but the men's team finished where they were expected to finish. They are an international also-ran.

I'm tired of swimming. Do they really need to show every heat of every stroke? There's no side stroke/dog paddle events, right? They still have the distance swims-ugh.
