I was watching the USA men play on Sunday and noticed that Hugh McCutcheon was using an earpiece and my mother asked me what was that for and I could not answer her. I noticed that the assistant coaches were using them also.
Could someone help me with that question? Thanks!

There are assistants and video people up in the stands giving the staff live scouting of what the team is doing and what the opponents are doing.

An article I saw explained that USAV pays a crap salary so Hugh is having to support his family with day trading stocks on the side. He uses the earpiece to interact with the voice-recognition software that runs his stock tickers. and since global markets are open 24/7 he has to multitask during matches to keep up.

Phaedrus and OverAndUnder,
Thanks a bunch!! You made my day with both responses!
I sure wish our club could have done the same thing in some of our qualifier tournaments over the years!!

Traveling internationally watching/coaching volleyball representing your home country sounds like it'd be a volleyball fan/players dream.

That's another reason to wear the earpiece -- he often is coaching two teams at once.

There maybe some dream like aspects but how many weekends do you suppose he's spent with his family this year? Wiz lives in Lakeville, Minn and Hugh works in Anaheim, when he's not spending a month in East Asia, or Europe, or a long weekend in Brazil. Its a great job, to coach some of the best players in the world, but at the same time it is not an easy lifestyle.

And for any college fans wondering, the NCAA has yet to issue a clarification on whether the ear pieces are legal after the BYU men's volleyball team used one during its home opener in January. To my understanding -- but someone please correct me if I'm wrong -- it's up to the individual conferences to determine if a team can use them during a match.

Alright, I'll jump in. The earpiece is so Wiz can nag Hugh about house chores. ;D

An article I saw explained that USAV pays a crap salary so Hugh is having to support his family with day trading stocks on the side. I wonder what exactly is a crap salary? I'll tell you what a crap salary is -- it's the dirty little secret of the USAV --- you're not gonna believe these shysters -- and how they completely screw over the winningest volleyball coach in bi-gendered National Team history -- you ready for it? -- hold your breath --- here goes --------- they pay McCutcheon in.......... american dollars!! You heard right -- they pay this hardworking immigrant living out of a suitcase and fighting constant jetlag and drama queen players, with an inflationary piece of actually quite ugly green paper which is based on a colossal debt-backed house of cards run by a good old boy network of private banks whose plan for it includes a total collapse any day now. I know I know -- pick your jaw back up off the floor -- it's almost diabolical isn't it? USAV is whistling their way to FIVB medals and titles, but in just a couple years this poor guy is gonna be left with an aching back bent over pushing a wheelbarrow full of hyperinflated greenbacks through the soul-crushing Minnesota wind and snow to the store to buy one loaf of bread for his hungry family huddled around the stove burning their mountain of worthless dollars as fuel to keep the frostbite at bay for another few hours. It's a sick joke, really -- USAV might as well promise to pay his salary in bajillions of squigorgles, or bars of gold-pressed latinum, or your wife's no-expiration-date "honey do list" brownie points, or any number of other completely fictional currencies.

O&A you're killing me.
There its also the story of where a certain female SEC head coach swore up and down that a certain B1G coach was getting super top secret messages from his staff hiding in the stand. She caught the student manager texting his mom from the officials table and made an NCAA official babysit the poor kid the rest of the match.

In college it is illegal for the transmission of audio or video to the bench. They can transmit statistical data.

...or your wife's no-expiration-date "honey do list" brownie points, or any number of other completely fictional currencies. umm...don't know about you guys, but my wife's brownie points are decidedly not fictional. there is this weird thing about only ever getting a max of 1 no matter how wonderful the earning deed is. and the rather rapid expiration of said point. but still -- not fictional... ;D
