"Yet when Hooker was 13, several youth coaches told her she would never get this far. They sent her home crying after telling her that she would never be well-rounded enough to play the sport at a high level. She could never play the back line because she was too tall and couldn’t crouch low enough to play defense, they said."
I find it hard to believe anyone told a VB player they were too tall....

Does anyone know further particulars about her birth?. I know she was born in Germany. Can anyone tell me why she's been born there?.

Remember she came up through a different avenue than the Santa Blablas of the west coast or Rick Butler's girls in the Midwest or that yahoo in Pennsylvania who trained Harmotto and other PSU stars. I have no problem believing that a public school's 8th grade history-teacher-slash-volleyball-coach told her she was too gangly to play the sport.

She played for Alamo in San Antonio, they are good coaches.

Well, to be fair to those early coaches, she is not on the Olympic team as a well-rounded volleyball player. She's on the team as the best terminator in the world and plays a position where floor defense is of tertiary importance.

However, I will say that her floor defense has been awesome over the course of this tournament and greatly improved, as is her service. I know people rip on her for not being able to pick up the tip but you have to realize she plays behind USA's weakest blocker and many times against the opposition's best outside hitter. It sounds a lot simpler than it is to execute.
