Is this personal preference of coaches and or teams? For example: I see a team wear a short or capped sleeve uniform top, but the libero wears something under it or long sleeved. I realize if you are a libero slidding across the floor, long sleeves makes you slide easier. Maybe as the primary passer the long sleeve is added protection as well. With materials that breath better, the long sleeves are not necessarily hotter. What are your thoughts and or preferences. Maybe it is just fad too, everyone started with short sleeve, went to long sleeve then now some are going back? The only differences I see in bottoms (spandex) is really length, sometimes material but I think that is based on colors available.

I remember seeing San Francisco at St Mary's a few years ago. USF was wearing long sleeves, but they weren't the tight unis with spandex. They were loose fitting, and some of the players were pulling up their sleeves. The libero was wearing short sleeves.
And what about no sleeves? I thought that I saw that with the USA NT.

We have always gone with the short or cap sleeve jerseys until a couple of years ago. Our new uniform supplier talked us into it and the kids LOVED the long sleeves. They weren't real keen on the body hugging type of jersey, mainly because they ordered jerseys that were their normal size and they should have ordered one size larger.
I thought we would have issues when the weather got warmer but none of them complained. Go figure.

It may be the preference of both the coaches and players. I know that when Kanani Danielson was playing for Hawaii, all the uniforms were short sleeves due to Kanani Danielson's body overheating medical issue.

I thought when we went to long sleeve they would be hot, I was wrong they were dry fit so they actually were cooler than the material of the short sleeves. Girls liked them because they could slide better and get less "road rash" from the floor on dives.

But it may have been a different issue for a player like Danielson, since her body doesn't produce sweat in order for her body to cool off.

After the 2006 season, the Stanford players took a series of votes to design the team's new uniforms and switched from short sleeves to long sleeves.
At the time, the clause in the NCAA women's volleyball rules for liberos that overrode the matching uniform requirement did not stipulate any common elements (e.g., same season, same sleeve length). So, as a freshman, Gabi Ailes wore short-sleeved away and home 2006 uniforms while her teammates wore home and away long-sleeved 2007 uniforms... presumably to her taste. When (if?) the rules adopt the two-libero system in current international rules, they might require the two liberos to wear matching uniforms and/or address common elements with the rest of the team's uniforms.
Though libero uniforms can be different, all player shorts... including those worn by liberos... must match. Stanford associate coach Denise Corlett once related to me that this is checked and that players have had to go back to get a matching pair of shorts.

Is it more about looks or game-time performance for most players?

Girls liked them because they could slide better and get less "road rash" from the floor on dives. I have of the new material synthetics that fit tight. To stay cool they use solid core fibers and frankly they feel cooler than not wearing it at all. I believe most of the women's VB unis are somewhat loose in the torso but with form-fitting sleeves. They might even be different types of material.

Is it more about looks or game-time performance for most players? It's both. My kids just plain like the feel of playing in them, go figure. Hey, if they're happy, maybe they'll play better. OK maybe not.

Doesn't it also have to do with the school's sponsors? For example, I haven't seen any of the adidas schools with long sleeves (Nebraska or UCLA). When I've watched all of the Nike schools play (Stanford, Texas, Penn St, USC to name a few), they're always in long sleeves.

Kidder just started wearing those arm warmers this year during her matches. Also, during one of UCLA's matches, Bo wore a tight long sleeve shirt under her jersey. In another match, she also wore the same arm warmers Kidder has been wearing. Perhaps the adidas schools will get long sleeves in the near future?

I am "old school" and like the long sleeves. I have been getting short and cap sleeves for my teams in recent years. Was pleasantly surprised when captain asked to get long sleeves 2 years ago. Now both jerseys we wear are long sleeve.
