I didn't want to hijact the "Class of 2014" thread with all Hawaii stuff, so I wanted to start my own.
But, with names flying around and being that's a huge year for Hawaii recruit as they lose Goodman, Hartong, Uiato, Kastl, and Longo....who is Hawaii recruiting for 2014 and which top recruits (if any) is considering Hawaii?
Does Dave look at what Longo brings to the table and searches for a top libero? Or goes with his typical local players and "see where they end up"?

my question is, is this the year that Shoji will retire losing so many players and his son being done with school?

my question is, is this the year that Shoji will retire losing so many players and his son being done with school? No, I do not think so, for the following reasons. 1. He will not just leave Croson, Voerster, Adolpho, and Stauber, flat like that. He is not that kind of coach. 2. He would not leave the new coach with an almost empty roster. My guess is that if he were to retire it will probably be after the 2015 season, at the earliest, as long as he stays healthy.

I do know Dave is looking at one or two girls at Kamehameha. I just do not know if they are Soph, or Jr., this year.

Higgins and Taylor will fill in nicely for Uiato and Hartong. Higgins could beat out Uiato for the starting spot next season IMO. Hartong will be harder to replace but the reports on Taylor have been very encouraging. They'll also still have Croson and Olevau. I'm sure Dave's got something up his sleeve. I don't really know much about the 2014 class so I have no idea what recruits are still available.

If Higgins can beat out Uiato, that'll be great...will Stauber transfer? Is she on scholarship? I was thinking Shoji would ask Higgins to red-shirt since he'll have Stauber and Uiato. I was thinking the same thing with Taylor, unless she is that good. I mean next year, they'll have Hartong, Goodman, Croson, Olevau, Kastl, and Long at OH or OPP. I forgot to add Tuaniga will also be gone after next year, but the middles look solid with Vorster/Haggins/Adolpho. Will Hawaii have 4 scholarships available for 2014?

Nikki Taylor is the real deal, as far as hitters go. And I won't be surprise to see her start next season. Higgins is good, but beating out a three year starter with a lot of experience, highly unlikely. Higgins will definitely be the setter of the future for Hawaii. Stauber is very good as well, despite not starting for the Wahine, she could start at any other Division I program. Interesting to see how things will go next year, but I'm very excited about Hawaii 2013 class!!!

I pretty much agree with you and I also think will Jade and Kalei will continue to improve until 2014.

It's interesting because there are 12 players on scholarship this season: Hartong, Uiato, Goodman, Kastl, Longo, Tuaniga, Croson, Vorster, Stauber, Hagins, Long, Manu-Olevao.
Assuming all 12 players return next season in 2013, there's two players who won't be on scholarship because Higgins and Taylor are scholarship recruits.
With that said, I believe two players may not be on scholarship in 2013, perhaps Stauber and Long and they will regain scholarships in 2014, after Hartong, Uiato, Goodman, Kastl, Tuaniga and Longo graduate.
That still leaves 4 scholarships in 2014... I'd think 1 middle, 2 outsides and 1 setter is what Shoji will be looking for. Kamehameha setter Alohi Robins-Hardy is part of the 2014 class and at 6-1, you can bet Shoji wants her bad. She's not the most fluent yet at the position, but she's progressed a lot and you can't teach 6'1 and athletic. Hawaii hasn't had a tall setter since Carey.
I've actually heard Shoji may sign a couple international recruits for 2014 as well. He's mentioned about opening up the international pipeline and after losing a senior heavy class of 6, it might be wise to go international.

Looking at the Wahine roster they actually lose nine players in 2013 considering they all stay on the roster: Emily Hartong, Ali Longo, Ashley Kastl, Kaela Goodman, Mita Uiato, Kristiana Tuaniga, Sarah Mendoza, Kristina Kam, and Courtney Lelepali...another interesting and fun fact, would this be Dave's largest graduating class if they all do stick around for next season?

I've seen Nikki Taylor play before a couple times during the high school state playoffs. But I think she was playing MB at the time.

I remember reading on Cindy Luis' blog that Stauber would be on scholarship this season. It was mentioned she'd eventually be on scholarship by the coaching staff. But again, it's mainly all speculation. I do believe two players will not be on scholarship next season, but regain there scholarships in 2014 after the 6-scholarship senior class graduates. If it were to come down to it, I think it would be Stauber and Long. Sarah Mendoza is redshirting along with Olevao, Ponce and Spieler. She'll be a redshirt junior fall of 2013.
