remember the block, not so much the back row. Back in those days Hebert never gave scholarships to back row players. And I don't think he scouted that hard for top walk on DS's. He just went for the big front row and was pretty good at finding them. His last few years here were down for him so maybe he learned his lesson on how important the back row is. When Mike coached at Illinois there was no libero, 12 subs and each player could only enter the game three times. The emphasis was on players who could play all the way around. Aaaaah the good old days...and SOS too!

I never mentioned the Libero. The 15 subs just started last year. The back row was 3 players as it is now. The main difference is there's fewer bad teams now.

15 subs were before 12 subs, as well as starting back up again last year.

I hope this is okay with the Hamblys....but there is a local Champaign blog/website that features Champaign-Urbana homes and families. Recently, University of Illinois volleyball coach Kevin Hambly's home was featured on the site along with some information about his wonderful wife, ex-Illini volleyball player Mary (Coleman) and their two beautiful daughters, Quinn 6 and Maura 4. I know I am extremely prejudiced, but the more I know about Coach Hambly, the more I respect and admire him! www.housetalkn.com/2012/11/housetalkn-with-kevin-mary-hambly.html

I don't know for sure but it certainly wouldn't surprise me. She was/is an excellent student.
Sounds like she's taking over a lot of the administrative jobs Jen used to do. Kevin always said he would need two coaches to replace her. One down, one to go.

With the recent hire of Bangert to do administrative work I would think Gergenwould be freeed up to concentrate on coaching and recruiting. Hambly has said for years in Jen left he'd have to hire two coaches. Looks like he kinda did. Ironic they both came from OSU.

Any inside info why Gergen would leave Ohio State as an assistant coach to come to Illinois as an assistant coach?

Any inside info why Gergen would leave Ohio State as an assistant coach to come to Illinois as an assistant coach? I think Illinois is a better program and has the potential to be on the rise. It seems like they have better support as well. She's also going to be the recruiting coordinator for the Illini, so that would be a promotion over what she was doing at OSU.

Something I found very interesting. The Illinois WVB & MBB both had silent auctions of team items for their Cancer games. The WVB match had about 3,000 fans while the MBB game had 16,600 fans with both having about the same number of items. Despite this the VB team fans raised about DOUBLE the MBB team fans did with less than one fifth the amount of fans. Not sure how much of a good thing it is and what sort of message it sends but yay VB fans.

I bid on a number of players jerseys. I actually only got Beltran's back up jersey from e-bay.
