Thomas does wayyyyy to many behind the scenes things to not have the starting rightside spot. She is a great blocker, gets digs in the front row and sets the ball perfectly when lauren cant get to it and can hit the ball when needed
My lineup: OH1 Ellen Chapman, Bates DS, with workman getting reps at DS OH2 Morales, with Fricano getting put in when a big block is needed. RS Thomas, with Mikaelsen getting in a lot but Thomas always having the 3 rotations in the Backline MH1 Nelson w/ Kvas or Workman serving for her MH2 Thompson L Morey w/ Workman, and Bates close behind her for that spot.

If healthy, I see Mikaelsen winning the RS spot. See see Thomas competing for more playing time on the Left. I think Morales will have a roll in offense from the back row. If she's only playing 3 rotations, she'll have more energy to expel in the back row. Morales isn't that great of a backrow player. She's super athletic, which allows her to get away with some things that other, less athletic girls, can't get away with. However, she does make a lot of silly and unforced errors on defense. She did a lot better than I expected this season, but I can't see her being the OH2 next season unless %*$# really hits the fan. I would agree.

Bates did not sign with Wisconsin to be a DS. She wants to play front row, and the articles discussing her signing affirmed this. I find it interesting that you do not think Graff or Blake will play, but you think that Fricano and Bates will.

I've seen Wisconsin play a couple times this season and during warm-ups, have never seen Fricano hit on the left. So there's that.

You're probably right about Graff. I hope her ankle heals up, but it wouldn't surprise me if it takes her a long time to get back to full strength. Ankles are tricky like that. And if she has to hold back, while others can go all out, then they will get playing time ahead of her. It's too bad. As for Blake, well, I hope she gets more time. But Nelson has the better connection with LC at this point.

I am not saying that she would be a go to hitter on the leftside but if there is a big rightside attacker hitting over Morales Fricano would my choice to go in but I think she will be on the leftside in 2015 as a solid attacker. The article on the signing also says how good of a backrow player Bates is and she could hit out of the backrow giving them more offensive weapons than Caroline Workman would. Obviously she would be the other outside in 15 but im saying she wont be a front row player this year.

Why is everyone so high on this backrow attacking thing all of a sudden? Wisconsin didn't use one all season.

Why is everyone so high on this backrow attacking thing all of a sudden? Wisconsin didn't use one all season. Actually, they did a little bit. It was just with Thomas on the right rather than a more traditional pipe attack. At least once, they ran an x-play to back row right side attack from Thomas for a kill.

If she's only playing 3 rotations, she'll have more energy to expel in the back row. And Mikalsen had begun to put up a pretty good block...she still has a ways to go, but I like her better than Thomas. I think Thomas is great, but will likely only play back row for Julia.

I have been consistently underwhelmed by Jules in her career. But to reiterate, perhaps she will benefit from new coaching. Maybe she was overhyped. That is, I think she is a solid player, but not a standout. She has had perhaps 3-4 standout matches in her career. She has good athletic skills.
