I have the following movies in my possession (to be viewed within the next week): Philomena Captain Phillips American Hustle 12 Years a Slave Dallas Buyer's Club August Osage County I'm sure I'll hate every one of them. Over the years, I've become more of a fan of TV serials than the 2-hr movie. Man, you're a Debibie Downer. Philomena was a tear jerker. Enjoyed Captain Phillips. Tom Hanks shoulda been nominated.

I saw August Osage County on stage. It was good, but pretty dark and depressing.

Maybe it was due to the fact that I came in with high expectations, but Godzilla was just sort of "meh." Pacing was slow, characters seemed underdeveloped emotionally. Frankly the CG Godzilla seemed to exude more emotion than the actors. (Except Bryan Cranston.)
Hoping my just-as-high-if-not-more expectations for X-Men delivers.

I have learned to expect disappointment not greatness in movies. Same with people.

That's the way I feel about myself.
Philomena -- OK, but I was expected a bigger emotional payoff Captain Phillips -- better than I expected. Hanks was also better than I expected. Lousy role for Catherine Keener. American Hustle -- really liked it. See Gravity thread. Or not. 12 Years a Slave -- much ado about a so-so film. Not Oscar-worthy, imo. Dallas Buyer's Club -- not interested. May see it eventually. August Osage County -- haven't seen it.

A guy who flew to the same meeting I just attended said that he watched Dallas Buyer's Club on the airplane and thought it was pretty good.

Hoping my just-as-high-if-not-more expectations for X-Men delivers. Days of Future Past is really THE defining X-Men story. Well, maybe that or Dark Phoenix. In any event, I wouldn't expect a movie version would really do it justice. But you never know.

DoFP is one of my favorite story arcs as well, and quick glances at early returns from Rottentomatoes/ Metacritic, it's going to be good. Also very excited about Age of Apocalypse in 2016.

Okay, so I've seen most of the movies on my list (above):
Philomena -- I was expecting a story about a girl named Philomena who couldn't get dates because of her name. Instead, I got something better. Judi Dench was, as always, great. She can deliver the subtlest emotions through a flick of the right facial muscles. This is what's missing in porn stars. They can't deliver the right emotion at the right time. They could learn a thing or two from Dench re. acting, that is. Grade: A-
American Hustle -- I was expecting a movie about a group of cons planning the ultimate heist at a grand hotel. I wasn't expecting Abscam. However, as soon as they showed the first black/white footage of the hotel room where the briefcase, the sheik, and the politicians were present, I immediately thought of Abscam. I lived through Abscam in the 1970s when I was just a little boy. I never liked Amy Adams. I don't think she's a good actress at all. Grade: B+
12 Years a Slave -- I was expecting a modern day story of human trafficking. I got the pre-Civil War days instead. Okay movie. Not great. Grade: B-
Captain Phillips -- I never followed the real life story of this event when it happened back in 2009. I was busy. So, everything in this movie was a surprise. I totally didn't expect involvement from the military. I thought Phillips and his crew would take out the pirates one-by-one. Grade: A-
Dallas Buyers Club -- I thought this movie was going to be about some sex/prostitution club in Dallas where a smug Matthew McConaughey would run the show. Instead, I got AIDS in the 1980s. Much better than I expected. McConaughey was deserving of the Oscar, as was Jared Leto. Grade: A
August: Osage County -- Haven't seen it yet. Probably because I hate Julia Roberts and her big fat mouth.
Gravity: I loved both scenes where the debris comes bombarding in. But, why the hell did they cast Sandra Bullock? I question the realism. I think if an astronaut suffered as many blows as they did in the movie, they would be jello by now. Grade: B+

August: Osage County -- Haven't seen it yet. Probably because I hate Julia Roberts and her big fat mouth. Didn't see the movie, but I did see the play. Pretty much every character in the story has multiple bad things happen to them, so if you hate one of the actresses (or all of the actresses) you get to see their characters get emotionally destroyed.

The lego movie was outstanding. Great for adults and kids and has enough hidden humor that the kids may not understand but adults will.
