vballfreak808 great job! Here's a Big West link you may want to add. It will provide all the relevant links such as internet streaming for every Big West volleyball match for the current week. www.bigwest.org/tv/Did you list Cal Poly's volleyball facebook so they can get more likes, currently at 190. Well UCI also has a volleyball facebook with a fewer more likes. www.facebook.com/uciwomensvolleyballThanks, and thanks for the links! UCI's page only has a few more likes than Cal Poly haha

I checked the roster that is presently on the UCSB website and counted only 12 players instead of the 13 that had been listed just a couple weeks ago. The missing name was Formico. I really wish it was a mistake, but I don't see how. A bad break for UCSB. I wonder where she went? Are you talking about this roster? I see 12 names on here and she is one of them. www.ucsbgauchos.com/sports/w-volley/2012-13/roster (Sorry forgot to put the link) Thanks. Yesterday was a really bad day physically and mentally (obviously). However, that goes back to my question that if we have Formico, why do we bring in 3 more liberos? And again, thanks for putting this thread together. New Players: UCSB Player Height Position High School Kristen Berlo 6'1 Middle Blocker San Marcos Helen Gannon 5'4 Libero Sacred Heart Prep Phoebe Grunt 6'4 Middle Blocker St. Joseph Notre Dame Ella Roberts 5'9 Libero Beckman Ali Spindt 6'1 Outside Hitter Menlo Atherton Allie Sullberg 6'1 Middle Blocker Woodside Catherine Wes 5'8 Libero St. Francis Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/post/1008820/quote/49898?page=1#ixzz2aFBtMidS

I'm new to this forum however I do know that there are many player personnel changes on the horizon at UCSB. Not only will you see many new recruits, but people will be missing from last year's roster that were starters.

Long Beach enters 2013 with the most uncertainty in the program since BG took over the program, IMO.
The core of the indoor team (and National Championship Sand team) are now gone. Gone are Janisa Johnson, Libby Fontaniila from last year's team, as well as the departure of Alma Serna for academics. Interesting that Northridge has recruited her sister.
The biggest loss is setter Tara Roenecke, who graduated but had a year left, although a shoulder injury might have made that a mute issue anyway. Roenecke held LB together last year even on a hobbled knee. Her offensive/sand style will missed, and the biggest issue is filling those shoes.
Erin Juley is the presumptive starter at setter, but she's had a history of leg problems and sat out after being all-frosh Big West in '11. Taylor Johnson is the frosh incoming setter and will be interesting to see if she gets court time early and challenges Juley for time or gets in time at setter, given Juley's history. Juley being healthy could go a long way to making LB compete with Hawaii for the title.
With two all-americans in Okpala & Haleigh Hampton, LB starts the year with one of the best middle combos in the nation. The issue has been keeping the middles heathly. Tiara Wallace progressed a lot at the of end the season, so LB will be strong in the middle barring a repeat of '12 where both Serna & Hampton went down by the 2nd game of the season. Ideally, Wallace could red-shirt either this year or next as she won't get much time if Hampton stays healthy.
With Tyler Jackson & Chelsea Crabrajac - LB should be solid at libero & DS - not sure who will be which. Both have great serves, Crabrajac battled some injuries. TJ seemed to struggle at libero early in '12 until Fontanilla took over. TJ is quick, but she might be better off staying in the DS role.
OH is the big mystery, no shortage of experience with Mackie at OPP & Aigner-Swesey at OPP/LS, both have been decent by Big West standards, both good blocking OHs but not the best defensively. Mackie has hops, but that hasn't translated into being a dominate hitter, seems like she's never had a 'closer' mentality. Hopefully Aigner-Swesey's sand experience carries her skill level up another notch. The big question is how much last years all-frosh Alex Reid and incoming top 50 Joy Miley contribute. LB is deep here, and I'd expect this could be a great year for Reid with Reid's athleticism. LB needs a terminator to develop out of the group. Reid is the likely one IMO with her vertical leap and some great stretches of play last year. Lot's of competition her and in the backrow - which is a good thing.
LB will have a real issue replacing the leadership and all-court style of Roenecke and Janisa Johnson that carried them last year. If Hampton, Juley, & Cabrajac can stay free of the injuries that have plagued them for 2 years, LB could definitely challenge Hawaii,
Given the talent Northridge & UCSB return, and Keddy getting back to Poly and Poly finally having a quality setter in Kuber - the Big West should be tougher at the top than last year. With Hawaii losing Croson, makes it more of a race than it might have been if she was in Hawaii's line-up.
IMO LB is likely to be 2-3, but could be anywhere from 1-6 depending on how things go at the setter position.
My starting line-up Guess:
MB: Okpala, Hampton OH: MacKie, Reid S: Juley DS: Cabrajac L: Tyler Jackson

I agree that setting is likely to be the biggest question for this year's team. Juley's backup, an incoming freshman, was committed to Oregon for a time so I assume that she is a solid ballplayer.
I also agree that a healthy Long Beach challenges Hawaii for the top spot.
Finally, I think that we may see freshman OH Joy Miley on the court before long. She's a very skilled and athletic player.

Well, someone's going to do it so it may as well be me: let's list our predictions for the best BW player at each position.
For me, some of these are very predictable, but in a few cases, I've gone out on a limb and made some unusual guesses. In those cases, these are dark horse players that I think may have breakout seasons. Plus, I'm sure I've completely overlooked a player or two. Okay, those are all my caveats and excuses; here we go:
OH: Best - Hartong (Hawaii); Honorable Mentions - Keddy, Squires
MB: Best - Okpala (LBS); Honorable Mentions - Hinger, Hampton if healthy
Opp: Best - Wright (Irvine); Honorable Mentions - Taylor
Setter: Best - Tie: Uiato (Hawaii) and Gedryn (Northridge); Honorable Mentions: Woolway, Juley if healthy
Libero/DS: Best - Formico (Santa Barbara); Honorable Mentions: Jackson
(fixed the Hampton mistake)

Keddy is a MB as well, but was unusual in playing all around as a MB. Both of Hawaii's MBs should be up there. IMO the Big West has a very good crop at MB and setters, not so much for OHs. UCSB's & Poly's setters last year were good for freshmen. I would put Hartong & Keddy in a category all by themselves.

BG may experiment with his two setters but he would be nuts not to give the final nod to Taylor! Johnson is a better blocker and a better attacker and a lefty at 5'11"! She is a stud. A great kid and will be liked by all...

I'm concerned that Johnson is an incoming freshman while Juley has a successful year under her belt at LB. Of course, she needs to be healthy.

They show the 2012 roster with 10 players now. Formico is not on that one. That really sucks because she was a fun player to watch. But the addition of 3 back row players do make sense since Formico is now gone and Erica Lau graduated leaving Shauna Klein as the only returnee of the bunch. Hopefully someone steps up and is good enough to replace Formico.

However, I swear I saw Keddy on the left side last time I saw her play.

I was just looking thru the schedules and noticed Hawaii plays a team I'm not familiar with. Toyota Auto Body sounds like the name of a repair shop or car dealership. lol

Big thanks to vballfreak808 for adding last season's RPIs to the non-conference opponents for the team schedules on Page 1 of this thread.
Doing a quick RPI tally Hawaii and Long Beach St. have the strongest schedules playing 10 & 9 top 100 RPI teams. CSUN & UCI also have tough schedules playing 10 & 11 top 150 RPI teams. The weakest SOS belong to Davis & Fullerton who should enter Big West play with winning records.
Hawaii top 50 = 7 51-100 = 3 101-150 = over 151 = 2
Long Beach St. top 50 = 7 51-100 = 2 101-150 = 0 over 151 = 4 _____
CSUN top 50 = 5 51-100 = 2 101-150 = 3 over 151 = 3
UC Irvine top 50 = 2 51-100 = 6 101-150 = 3 over 151 = 3 _____
Cal Poly top 50 = 6 51-100 = 2 101-150 = 0 over 151 = 5
UCSB top 50 = 5 51-100 = 2 101-150 = 0 over 151 = 5 _____
UC Davis top 50 = 2 51-100 = 4 101-150 = 0 over 151 = 7
Cal St. Fullerton top 50 = 2 51-100 = 2 101-150 = 0 over 151 = 8

I can't say for sure that the game against Texas. But Hawaii needs to beat out UCLA. This is there last season to shine and I am guessing that Hawaii will add another Big West title to their trophy case. Hopefully hopefully Hawaii gives Texas a run for their money.
Hoping LBSU also joins Hawaii in making a appearance in the NCAA women's volleyball tournament.
My guess top 3 finishers. 1.Hawai'i 2.Long Beach State 3.Cal. State Northridge
