I don't think Kerri is the best in the world this summer, she's getting back there though. I think if you put Whitney with any of the next 4 best players on the AVP, she'd be right there at the end. I will say, Whitney is getting some VALUABLE points towards next year's AVP. To your point on Todd and Ryan, seeding is huge.
The Todd & Ryan pairing results remind we a lot of when Nick and Phil started playing full time. A lot of 3 set matches and some good wins plus some bad ones. Phil & Sean took some early loses on the FIVB, so it can happen to everybody.

I rated their play as dead even with Belov-Roberts in that match, with the "wanting it" factor all on Andrey's and Adam's side. Belov was the most effective player on the court and certainly the most interesting. His string-of-surprises style had Doherty tied in knots, and should have been enough to carry the match -- but somehow it wasn't.

I don't think anyone in the US is competitive with April/Kerri next year and beyond that there is nobody on the top level in the US right now. Summer could be there based on a couple tourneys this year, but that's a little ways off

I think the difference with Nick/Phil is that they just weren't used to the level of competition. Todd/Ryan just seem to have a ton of holes.
Speed Desire Passing Unforced errors
All of those are big problems for that team right now

I hear what you are saying, but Nick and Phil had holes as well back then. Unforced errors conditioning ablitiy to close out matches
Ryan should get the benefit of a couple years too (this is his 1st real professional full professional season). Todd took a big chance with Ryan, I'm sure his competitive drive to prove all the naysayers wrong is there. I'm wondering if Santa Barbara is Todd's retirement from play tournament??
