Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and this will be my first thread. I have been a fan of Purdue volleyball since I attended there in 2003. We have had several amazing players come through the system like K. Miller, S. Lynch, D. Merlau, J. Hart, R. Dargan, K. Arthurs, C. Cramer, A. Turner, R. Davis and etc.... I know that we are not quite up to par to get multiple star/top tier recruits like Penn State, but we do an amazing job of developing second tier recruits to become First Team All Americans. But we have twice fallen short one game from the Final Four. I think that the Shondell brothers and Kathy Jewell have been a wonderful coaching staff and have turned our program around 100%. The team loses a lot of quality players, but the current players and the incoming class looks promising. Will Purdue be rebuilding next year or will they start from where they left off? What is Purdue lacking that is stopping us from winning the big one?

Purdue has a top-notch class coming in next year. They'll be young, but fans and competition should expect the trademark Shondell-intensity with these newbies.

I think you are wrong with this statement:
"I know that we are not quite up to par to get multiple star/top tier recruits like Penn State ..."
We are getting some very, very good recruits.

Penn State is getting 5 Gatorade Players of the Year...we are only getting two. Penn State has top ten people coming in a yearly basis. We just now got one number 10 recruit. The Shondell brothers and Jewell are amazing coaches and they can make second tier recruits into First Team All Americans. I said in my message that we are getting very good recruits and that the future looks promising. But back to what I was asking...will next year be a rebuilding year or will we pick up where we ended this year?

Anybody that thinks the 2014 recruits don't stack up to other programs recruiting is operating from an alternate universe. Purdue graduates 5 quality seniors but the 2014 class will outshine them by a few gigawatts.

I can see that Purdue will be stacking on height next season, some really big girls coming in...

I think you are wrong with this statement: "I know that we are not quite up to par to get multiple star/top tier recruits like Penn State ..." We are getting some very, very good recruits. And to expand on that point, if you are going to use Penn State's recruits as a benchmark, you are going to be perpetually sad. Penn State simply reloads, and they have the entire market cornered from Maine to Georgia (and Oklahoma), because there are no programs of that caliber within 200 miles (generously).

Ok, thanks for all of your replies. I was just stressing over nothing then. I love Purdue Volleyball and will for years to come. I know that there are several people on here that know more than I do about volleyball. I am glad to hear that most of you do believe that Purdue can only get better from here. I googled a few of the recruits and watched some YouTube videos on them...I am very excited about the future Thanks for all of your insight...it's much appreciated.

I have seen Azariah Stahl play against Orange County the past two summers. Ask Charlie, she killed them.

Our beloved boilers have an incredible class coming in. I think it's all coming along as it should, slowly but surely. You can't just recruit players because you are in the Big Ten, but with the constant success in the post season, more visibility in the public eye, the large and constant home crowd, and ESPECIALLY because the new facilities that are among the top in the country, it's only a matter of time that Purdue will get to its first Final Four. Dave has done an incredible job finding diamonds in the rough with recruits (Ariel Turner, Carly Cramer, Tiff Fisher, Kiki Jones, Hiliary Fox, Amanda Neill, etc.) and will see more top 5 recruiting classes in the future. This class coming in can flat out PLAY, next year will be fun but there will be some growing pains.
It will be very interesting to see how Dave moves the pieces he has now and combine them with the incoming talented class. Who will redshirt? Will Val Nichol stay hitting and setting, how will he deal with 4 middles (especially with how well Fay played), will Amanda Neill put on the libero jersey? Who will be used more, Kate Workman or Bridget Powell? Will Purdue have a 6 rotation player soon? Just some questions...

I think Purdue's biggest obstacle next season is having and upside that can handle playing 6 rotations if Shondell continues to run with two setters (which is likely next season with there being a Frosh setter that redshirted this season). Outside of that issue, they return Jones and Nichol who are both All-Americans, big improving attackers in Adelaja, Epenesa, and Drews, and fine back court talent that will be refined and ready to battle next fall.

Purdue has some great commitments and they are making headway in the gap between their talent and PSU's. Its still a gap, but they are definitely moving in the right direction. I can tell you this, kids improve as much in that program as they do in any in the country.

Yeah the YouTube videos have been a feast for the eyes. I have only seen the videos where they only showed one game essentially....could anyone give me a link to a highlight video or anything? I am expecting some growing pains as is the norm for all recruits. The Shondells seem hungry for more and seem to always recruit the players who feed into his philosophy and will play hard for them and Purdue. Jewell has been a phenomenal recruiter and coach as well. I have respect for all three and can only see us going up Val has made such huge strides in setting in the 6-2 system. But we also have Evans and another setter/OH coming in too. Since I have not seen the other two play, I'd say Nichol has the upper hand. I cannot wait to watch them play in some scrimmages this summer. I agree the middles seem loaded this coming year with Kaisley feeling better too. I am guessing that since Neil has a lot more experience than Powell and Workman but Shondell did comment one time that Workman and Powell are very quality players that have not had the chance to play yet. When Cramer was out for a bit, I think that they both received equal playing time. I also have to believe that they must be decent seeing as how they have to practice against all of our hitters. Would Val be considered a 6 rotation player? I don't think she ever came out in matches. It seems that Azariah may be a 6 rotation player as well. Her stats showed that she can do it all...dig, kill, block, and serve up some aces.

So I was made aware that there was an Azariah Stahl YouTube page. Thanks friend! I really enjoyed the future Boilermaker clip a lot. It was fun to see her 8th grade video as well. She will be an amazing addition to Purdue. I will still be on the lookout for videos of the other recruits...

Some of you REALLY need to read up a bit before you start making comments like some of these.
"Second-tier recruits"? Really? Even just in the last few years, Ariel Turner, Val Nichol, Kiki Jones, and Annie Drews were some of the most highly recruited players in their class. If you want to look farther back, Danita Merlau and Jaclyn Hart were among the top 20 players in their respective classes with Merlau in the top 10. No, they don't consistently get top recruits like PSU, USC, Nebraska, etc., but the girls they have on their team are HARDLY "second-tier."
