Jones, Scambray and Schwan all made good cases that they can contribute this year.

Sybeldon leading the way in hitting % is a nice surprise.
Tomclen was correct on the previous page, as UW went to 5 sets against Gonzaga. But a win is a win.

Tia Scambray was very solid on defense, I think her all around skills and great passing will keep her starting all season. Krista was very sloppy on defense until the last match. Crissy and Courtney are battling for OP2. Kaleigh was in top form and the setters went to her often. Lots of room for improvement on passing and setting.

I watched all the UW matches and to me the standouts were Scambry, Vansant, and Nelson. At times I thought Scambry was the best all-around player on the court. Tanner did a fine job in the 6-2 though I would have loved to see her play in the front row. Jones also looked very good, and I thought it interesting that in the crucial game 5 against Gonzaga, she was in the lineup. Strickland also played well and plays the libero position aggressively. On the flip side Schwan never looked comfortable on the court. She was either extremely nervous or just uncomfortable. DeHoog did not get a lot of court time which surprised me. The other concern I would have is that at this point the UW offense seemed very conservative. Both Beals and Tanner seemed to only set one position away; pass to right set to right, pass to left set to left. That works against smaller teams but I would think that in PAC 12 they are going to have to run more pin to pin.
Overall UW did what was necessary to win.

Not going to read too much into these 3 wins, other than it looks like there's a ton of potential from Tanner, Jones and Scambry.
I think we'll know a whole lot more about Washington after we see how they play against BYU. That road trip and coming home to face Wisconsin should make this a great building experience for this team...especially the newcomers.

Tanner isn't playing up front because her foot hasn't healed sufficiently. Jim is starting her out as a setter because her overall skill is such that he wants her in games and setting is the least stressful on her still not totally healed foot. This team has talent, if high school ratings are to be believed. But, I think it's pure fantasy to rate them just behind Stanford nationally. A lot of young players are going to have to grow up quickly if UW is going to advance well into the post-season. DeHoog not playing in the last 2 games may be a hint at her status for the rest of the year.

The other concern I would have is that at this point the UW offense seemed very conservative. I'm encouraged by the low number of errors. Clearly the go-to players are Vansant, Nelson, and Sybeldon. The role of the supporting cast is to be effective, but efficient. Scambray is on the front row for two rotations with Nelson, and Jones for two rotations with Vansant (which will likely limit her scoring opportunities, as it did Munoz'). Scambray is lightning quick and will hopefully keep teams from piling up on Nelson when Vansant is in the backrow. With a 6-2, you're shooting for consistent, not spectacular "Plum-like" sets. The bigger focus needs to be on improved passing, making the offense less predictable. As it is now, it looks like the most athletic players have found the floor. The potential of both Scambray and Jones has barely been scratched.

Given the hitting talent available, she might not hit at all this season. Next season, however, with Vansant and Nelson graduated, we could see: OH: Schwan, Scambray MB: Wade, Sybeldon OPP: Jones, Tanner S: Tanner, Beals L: Strickland

Krista Vansant did a 'live chat' on the Seattle Times website today at noon. Here's the transcript: Seattle Times - Krista VansantI asked a few questions which were answered. But I also asked "Do you or your teammates ever read VolleyTalk?" Sadly, the moderator didn't approve the question.
