taylor will be the go-to player, but i'm not sure if she's ready to just step into a hartong-like role just yet. nor would i want to see that kind of offense. hawaii will be successful if they can find a more balanced offense. i think they have a middle duo (magill/adolpho) who together can be enough of a threat to take the pressure off taylor/olevao and a first-time starter at the 3rd outside hitter spot (greeley/passi ... long?).
how would passi be as a left-side hitter? if her passing is serviceable, and she can smoothly make the move from the right to the left, i'd like to see that. then maybe use olevao as a non-passing right-side attacker. if olevao is freed up just to concentrate on hitting and blocking, it might help her to be more consistent, plus she puts up a decent block on opposing teams' strong side hitter.
or they could do what they did in 2009 with cubi-otineru and ferrell ... line up passi as the L2 (like otineru) to pass, and olevao as the opposite (like ferrell), and have both passi and olevao taking swings from the right and left (but using olevao more on the left and passi on the right).

So I was curious to see BYU-Hawaii's schedule for this upcoming season and I noticed it shows UH is playing matches against Daemen at Laie on Sept. 5 at 3 PM and then on Sept. 6 plays Florida Tech at 11 AM. I am thinking it is a strange typo by the BYU-Hawaii's webmaster, but I don't know for sure. Here's the link to BYU-Hawaii's upcoming season's schedule. byuhawaiisports.com/sports/wvball/2014-15/schedule

Okay I guess what I was thinking was correct. It is a typo by the BYU-Hawaii's webmaster. It should be UH-Hilo in place of UH.

Saw on social media that Nikki Taylor posted a picture of what seems to be open court and she took the picture as she was sitting on the side. Someone asked her why she was still sitting out and her reply was "elbow.. Three more weeks according to Doc."
Hope she heals fast. Three weeks from now is a few days before season opener. The other outsides hopefully step up fast as Taylor won't have much days to prepare for season possibly.

It's a chance for Olevao and Long to show they have the goods. Also might be a good way to debut Greeley and Passi.

so with nikki sidelined a bit... if she's kept out of the opening weekend matches, what does the line-up look like?
OH: olevao, greeley (i wonder if long will be given a shot) MB: magill, adolpho RS: passi (**now it seems huff might be given a look here) S: higgins (altho, shoji seemed to also be really high on koelsch) L/DS: mendoza, kahakai, guinasso, anderson, ponce (probably the most wide open position on the court, even if one starts at libero at the beginning of the season, a poor performance could elevate one of the others)

I posted this in the Texas thread but will also let local fans here know that if interested, The Longhorn Network will now be on Oceanic Cable starting 29 Aug 2014 as per Oceanic rep I spoke to today. He didn't have the exact channel(s) but I would think it would be easy to find. I do believe this will be on the "Sports Pass" package.

So Hawaii's projected OH's to begin the season (as of now) are Olevao and Long? Good thing get beer at the SSC, Hawai'i fans are going to need lots of it. Hope Higgins sets the middle every play, lol.

Heard that she is training on the rightside. She has been the biggest surprise so far. She is very athletic, and can hit on the left and rightside. Someone had mention that she is right in the same category as Hartong as far as being a very versatile player, that can play middle and outside.

At the scrimmage, I felt Kahakai was more vocal on court than Mendoza. Both were putting up great passes left and right, but Savannah came across as a better leader from this outsider's perspective. I think floor defense will be a strength this year. Excited to see Olevao and Long show the SSC how much they've progressed. Getting to watch Greeley on Sunday(or before) will be a treat. Go 'Bows!

Exactly my thoughts watching the scrimmage. I was thinking that Mendoza would have the first go at L being a senior with a year's successful experience being the first DS off the bench, but Shoji seems to have great confidence in starting freshman Kahakai. Reflects his giving her a scholarship to play backrow. I was also thinking that Greeley would get a start, but I guess that having her at the spotlite position of LS in the top level D1 match right from the get go may leave a negative impression on her if she doesn't perform well. Shoji knows Greeley is a 6 rotation player and wants to ease her into the set. At the scrimmage I didn't see Greeley having any serve/receive, or passing errors, blocked real well, and she connected on some kills with high velocity. She will be on the All-American team before she's done.

I admit I have doubts about both Long and Olevao as the starting OHs but according to all reports both are looking better than ever so they deserve first chance to prove themselves. I agree that Shoji may be easing Greeley into the lineup. She is definitely going to be a starter for the Sunday match. On the other hand, Shoji started Taylor for the first match last year. Can't wait to see the Wahine in action. It's been a long summer.
