Ginger Long was error- prone last season from the service line and as an OH (during the brief time she spent at that position during actual matches,) I believe those errors are the wellspring from which criticism of Ginger Long flow. That said, I believe in Long (despite my sarcastic comments earlier in the thread.) I love to see the local girls succeed, and look forward to good things from Long this season, Olevao too for that matter. Aloha, Barefoot in Kailua... Yes, Long was error-prone last year; she may have played more if not for that. You could see Shoji's frustration with her sometimes. I understand the criticism about her. In the context of Shoji's announced starting line up, and his history as the Wahine head coach, I opined that it should not be a surprise she would start the first match. There are concerns about her consistency, size, and upper body strength, and in the context of these physical abilities and skills (or limitations, thereof) they would be reasons why Long would not be in the starting line up.
Not sure if you remember back in the 90's when Heidi Illustre played as OH. I remember one match she had 18 hitting errors, but was not replaced. I felt sorry for her. This is what I mean in the context of Shoji's history at UH. It's perplexing to know exactly what his strategy is sometimes. Perhaps he wanted Illustre to dig out of the funk on her own. So perhaps he wants to build Long's confidence and experience, too, who knows? After 40 years we shouldn't be surprised about Shoji's line ups. But I understand--we still can't stop talking and commenting about it!

Ginger will have her chance starting Friday to show what she can do with her much increased court time. She and Olevao have similar athleticism abilities. Both are quick, can sky and hammer the ball. In question of both will be if they can handle the backrow defense and serve/receive. In practice Ginger has shown to be the best attacker from the backrow. I recall Jim Leahey being real compassionate and egging for her to do well. The loud cheers for Ginger that you'll hear will be me, as I sit right behind Kanoe and Chris. Aloha, Karrietfan... I can't remember what match it was, but I believe it was in Long's Freshmen season, Jim Leahey had called Long the "impeccable one" because she had been errorless at the service line. Right after that she made her first service error! Too ironic. Have a great time at the game!!

Aloha, everyone, first timer here. I've been watching Wahine volleyball religiously since the 70's and it should not be a surprise that Ginger Long might start. If Nikki Taylor was healthy she would start, I'm sure, and perhaps at Long's expense. But Ginger has paid her dues as this is her fourth year at UH, and she purportedly touches over 10' and had a quality beach season last Spring. Have we seen Ginger play indoors that much as a Wahine? Have we seen her just left in there to get the "kinks" out game after game? No--a couple of mistakes, and she's out; she makes a couple of points, game over. So we now might have the chance to see what Ginger can do all the way around the court. On the other hand, have we seen Kalei Greeley play a collegiate game? No. But remember Lily Kahumoku's first match? She did not start the first game; if memory serves me correct she played the second game and the rest is history. When Stanford played here in 1996 during the regular (pre?) season (the same year the same two teams met for the national championship), the Wahine won the first game 15-8, but then Cardinals freshmen Keri Walsh did not play that first game. She played the next 3 and Stanford won comfortably with Walsh bombing away with precision from the back row. So the person who starts is not necessarily the one who will finish or be in there the most. It's just great for UH to have the depth to be able to consider various choices. I'm actually excited to get to see Ginger on the court as a starter, she's an exciting player. Maybe I'm out of touch with the history of these posts, but I don't see why so many question marks and exclamation points need to be used when Long's playing potential is discussed. I don't get it. Is it Greeley's height? Greeley's three inches on Long, even on paper, does not mean a whole lot considering Long's seniority, maturity, and vertical. I'm excited to see Greeley play, too, and we'll get to see more than enough of her during her UH career, I'm sure. But it's not as if she comes here with the reputation like Fonoimoana had when she entered USC. Well, good luck to both players, and the whole team. Can't wait for Friday; only then will we know who will actually start and finish. i'll believe the hype when i see it for myself. i really don't want to be disappointed. i'd rather be surprisingly wrong in this case. for hawaii's sake i hope she does well and i'd LOVE nothing more than to see her progression along with olevao's-who's passing/defense was atrocious and very frustrating to watch. btw how is long's blocking capabilities?-guess we'll soon find out! GO BOWS!!

I think being on the sand team this past season should help Ginger's game on the indoor court. Heard she's made some strides and played well. How that transfers over to indoor we'll have to wait and see. I have faith her improvement will show. I was at the scrimmage and was pleasantly surprised. My boyfriend and I both agree that she was the best OH on the court that day. Less than 24 hours left before our team returns to the court. Go 'Bows. I hope you're right. See you tomorrow night! Go Bows!

Howzit, Rad. Yes, I remember the night when Heidi Illustre made error after error. The fans in our section were like "eh, enough already." I also remember Kristal Attwood making a lot of mistakes in a game back in the day. No one is perfect, mistakes happen and Kristal went on to become a very good player for the Wahine. As for Shoji's lineups, he knows best. I hope Long and Olevao do well.

Aloha radman, then I recall Jim saying "come on Ginger you can do it!". UH just returned from a road trip that Shoji praised Ginger for her serving. Very ironic indeed. Today will be a debut for many as starters, freshmen in D1 and Kanoa calling the shots. Exciting night ahead!
