As a parent of three kids, all of whom played multiple sports and two whom are D1 athletes, this makes me sick. I have been very involved with our athletics program, but I see my job to represent the student athlete. High school athletics is so much more than a win loss record. It is the memories, the opportunities, the friendships, the ability to grow. I am on record as saying high school athletics is not about kids like my girls who are going on to play college sports, it is about the average kid. We as parents have to stand up and stop this craziness. Parents who think only their child is all that and more. Those are the same kids that I do not hire when I have a position open. I am just sad to read stuff like this.

Aren't they one of the Texas schools with huge football complex, a couple of state championships? Without more info, it sounds like he had a lot of talent, succeeded, yet maybe didn't play the right kid(s) who may have been the DD of a big booster club contributor? Until I hear where he screwed up that is what I am reading between the lines. |

Even the great coaches at the highest level get pushed out. I'm thinking of football mostly: Don Shula, Chuck Noll, etc. The argument made was (and still is): the game has passed them by.

austiatatous, you make some comments that I am curious about. First, I will not judge this coach for this issue. I do not know him so I am not in a position to judge him. But my question is why are you initially blaming the parents? You also say he is a good man and a good coach. If he is, why was he fired? Just curious as to why you took that spin in your post. Coaches don't get fired if they are good coaches and a good person with a 48-2 record. Now they get fired if they are a good person but have a losing record. They get fired if they are a--holes and are mean and demeaning or have unethical conduct. I do not know if any of those characteristics apply in this case, but just curious as to your portrayal of this man.

Same thing happened at Papillion La Vista, one of the top HS programs in the nation- maybe 3 losses in five years. Parents be careful, be careful what you wish for. The new coach may be worse than what you complained about in the first place.
vball54 you are incorrect, coaches do get fired, even if they are a good coach, good person with a good record. Parents band together and have a hissy fit when their kids are not playing or not playing enough. Sometimes these parents are on the school board or it is the superintendent's kid. I have seen it happen over and over.
volleyballmom1532, you are doing things the right way- supporting your kids and letting the coaches coach, the kids compete and you cheer them on.

It is a sad day. This program always had athletes. He pushes kids to excel and gets seniors a role even if they don't play. That is why the program went from mildly above average before he got there to consistent top 10 in the state during his tenure. He will land somewhere good though and make them better.

I do not know if any of those characteristics apply in this case, but just curious as to your portrayal of this man. vball54, As you mentioned at 48-2 it probably wasn't about a lack of success so if the coach points at the parents as the reason he is being pushed out, absent another theory then I don't think austintatious is crossing any lines with that statement. 2nd, good people leading winning programs get fired every year because too many schools don't stand up to noisy parents/booster/school board members. If you have a school board member's kid on your team, or the child of someone like that and you don't play them regardless of that players talent, or your record, you are probably 50/50 to be retained. Often times there is a plausible cover story, like retirement, which they asked him to do in this case, or losing, or being a poor role model or any other of a number of possibilities that make it a non-story, so you don't always hear about it but it can and does happen in all sports, all over the country. |

Please don't speculate...Southlake Carroll runs a very professional athletics program. I am certain that the AD dept...the High School Administration all did a very in depth review of the entire program. The conclusion to dismiss a 48-2 coach was not taken lightly. However, there must have been plenty of reasons to do just that. This definitely was not a disgruntled parents issue.
