What I saw from Wisconsin's win against TX was that they served TX tough just like Penn State did to TX in 2010 (Semifinals) and again to WA this year. Wisconsin gave Penn State trouble for same reason and also Hickey's tough defense in back row by keeping rally's going giving them more opportunities to score. Yea, Lauren was great at setter but without Hickey's great digs the match with Penn State would have been over in 3. It was also evident that Lauren had a hard time passing tough shots while in back row. Penn State had same problem with A. Scott when she was in back row and they targeted her then. I'm sure Lauren will be working on that aspect of her game for this year. I predict Wisconsin has 10 or more losses this year due to losing their Libero unless they get a replacement as good or better than Hickey. Don't see them getting BIG Championship this year. As for Wisconsin almost beating Penn State in Finals, at no time did Wisconsin have Penn State at point of elimination in match. Had they gone to 5 and been up 13-9 or something like that, then I might agree with that statement. Their replacement was the DS. Morey is good. Defense is as good. Serve receive needs some work. FYI, the reason we played so well against most big hitting teams was the fact that we had two liberos and a DS in at any given time (Morey - DS, and Hickey) and Deme was a DS before she was forced outside. Having that luxury meant we didn't worry as much about terminating. It would come eventually.

I predict you being wrong. There was a lot of fire power on the bench that will make Wisco a more dynamic team in 2014.

Volleyball team was honored at the Badger men's basketball game last night. Photos in the linked tweets.
Good news: Jules is out of her boot. Meh news: Ito is still in a boot. Unsurprising, as she had a procedure on that ankle (foot?) last month. Bad news: Graff is not only still in a boot, but also on crutches.

How would you compare/contrast the run of Wisconsin this season vs. the run by Michigan the year before? The runs are somewhat similar. Wisconsin this year had a lot more attention than 2012 Michigan with a new coach and Carlini coming in. In 2012, Michigan showed some bursts of great play (winning against Nebraska after being down 0-2, beating Ohio State, and taking Penn State to 4 and 5) but they caught a hot streak and played great volleyball in the tournament. They had a more difficult path than the Badgers did, beating Louisville on the road, Michigan State, and beating the young talented Stanford squad. In the semifinals they matched up better with Texas than the Badgers did in 2013 and put up a good fight against Texas. Michigan was a team that very few were talking about/paying close attention to throughout the season, there wasn't really anything that special or unique about them--they had recently made an Elite 8 run, they had talented but not spectacular players at almost every position, etc. so I don't think there was as much excitement about Michigan. Wisconsin was one of the more intriguing teams coming into the season with a new coach, Carlini taking the throne as setter and all the talent that had underachieved the last few seasons. All season long Wisconsin was closely followed and they had an overachieving regular season that culminated in a tournament seed. The Badgers steadily improved all year and drew a favorable bracket. They coasted to the Final Four behind great play from Carlini and Thompson. Not many thought the Badgers could compete with Texas considering Texas's athletes were taller and more physical, but Wisconsin proved they were the real deal by handily beating Texas the first 2 sets and finishing the match in 4. Even after the great semifinal performance, many thought Wisconsin would get throttled by Penn State. They lost the first set to Penn State, but proved they were at Penn State's level in the last 3 sets, holding a 24-23 lead in Game 2, handily winning game 3 and leading 23-20 in game 4. Both teams came in having good seasons and finished the year incredibly strong. Wisconsin's season was much more dramatic though. I don't recall anything very unique about Michigan, but Wisconsin had lots of up and down drama between: 1. New coaches for the first time in 14 years 2. Lots of underachieving talent that would be back 3. Maybe the most hyped up setting recruit of all time chose to play at Wisconsin and would be an incoming freshman 4. So many injuries throughout the year: Graff, Blake, Ito, Mikaelson, Hickey, Carlini, etc. 5. A Final Four starting lineup featuring a 5'7" OH and a 5'11" middle 6. Carlini leading the Badgers to the Final Four and proving herself as arguably the top setter in the nation despite being a freshman (I know it's debatable...but no other setter was spoken about as much as Carlini was)

Carlini, Morey and Thompson to USA Tryouts, according to Sheffield twitter feed. I hope Carlini comes back!!!
It certainly did wonders for Hickey and Chapman. Now let's try to keep the coaches in NCAA compliance this time.
Also, spring tourneys with Marquette/Minnesota (2x) and something at Minnesota. More to come.

In the span of the last 15 months she has gone from 2nd asst at Dayton to 1st asst at Wisconsin. That's probably a $30K per year difference at the least. She is great at what she does and has been allowed to do just that. And she is still in the Midwest/B1G area. There is a .0000000001% chance she leaves in the next 5 years. Sheff has exactly what he wants at Wisconsin - two single asst coaches who are extremely focused on their volleyball coaching careers.

There is always changes and 5 years as an asst.can be an eternity. If Wisconsin continues to have a moderate to high level of success that program will be targeted for poaching. Heck, look around your league let alone the nation at the amount of movement. Its not inconceivable to have some major university even approach Sheffield with a sackful of money.

Other updates: Last weekend, Madison Magazine's TV program featured a segment on the 2013 Badgers. Watch here: www.madisonmagazine.com/Madison-Magazine/Videos/?v=57370 The players are not satisfied, and they are determined to return to the finals next year. DS Claire Raddatz is no longer on the roster. She did get a small amount of playing time this year, coming in instead of KT to serve for Dom in a few points. I wonder whether Sheffield is looking to walk on any more DSs for the fall. With Raddatz's departure and Hickey's graduation, we have Ito, Morey, Morales, Kvas, and Workman as DSs. Morey likely gets the libero jersey. Still curious what Morales's role will be in the fall. Crystal Graff is still on the roster. I hope this means she's decided to request a medical hardship and stick around through 2015. The coaching list hasn't been updated yet (Jake Barreau is still listed as VAC, when he's already working with Chicago State), but Annemarie Hickey will be a Student Assistant Coach this spring and fall. We can expect the full 2014 fall schedule in a few weeks, before season ticket renewals go on sale, but per Sheffield's twitter, the Badgers will be hosting Ball State, Miami (FL) and Missouri State in the InnTowner Invitational in September, and Penn State, Ohio State, Rutgers, Maryland, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, Illinois, and Purdue in conference play. This means we will NOT be seeing Michigan State, Northwestern, or Indiana. At least Northwestern is driveable. Hope that game is on a Saturday so we can go.
